HONOLULU –The second matchup between the Academy of Art men's basketball team and Hawai'i Pacific produced a different result, as the Urban Knights cruised to the Pacific West conference victory over the Sharks on Wednesday, 74-59.
"Tonight was a great bounce back game," said ART U head coach
Scott Waterman. "After our tough loss Monday, the guys responded and executed our game plan flawlessly tonight. That is reflected by the 31 percent field goal percentage we held HPU to, as well as our margin on the defensive glass. We did a great job sharing the ball with 20 assists and the entire team contributed."
Neither team could take control in the first half, as the largest lead of the game for either team in the early going was held by ART U (6-14, 4-9 PacWest) at 25-19. It was then that HPU (9-12, 7-8 PacWest) made its move, reeling off an 11-0 run to go up by what would be its largest lead of the game, 30-25. A 3-pointer from junior guard
Stefan Milivojevic in the final minutes of the first frame would put the Urban Knights ahead, 35-34. Along with Milivojevic, junior forward
Josh Hill led the way with eight points apiece, while the squad as a whole had success from the floor, shooting 48.3 percent.
Coming out of the break, ART U pulled off a 10-3 run, and built a lead that would last the rest of the way. The Urban Knights continued their hot shooting, as they went 16-for-29 (55.2 percent) from the field due in part to Milivojevic and junior guard
Dante Williams, who were a combined 10-for-13. Each would reach double-digits for the half, as Milivojevic notched 16 of his game-high 24 points as ART U breezed to the finish line.
Recording his fifth double-double of the season was Hill, as seven second-half rebounds would help him finish with 12 points and 12 boards. It was his
second double-double in as many games, as he finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds against Chaminade on Monday.
As a collective, the Urban Knights finished with
20 assists, their most in a single-game this season. ART U also snagged 42 rebounds, the most in a single-game since
pulling down 46 against Concordia on Jan. 4.
Three Sharks reached double-figures, led by Neema Namdar with 17 points, while Tavon Tarpley chipped in 13 points to go with four assists. Chidozie Ndu ended up with nine rebounds.
The final contest in Hawai'i will take place on Friday, as the Urban Knights will take on UH Hilo beginning at 7:30 p.m. HST.
