SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – In a Pacific West Conference pairing of two teams that combined for 212 points two weeks ago, Friday evening's rematch between Academy of Art women's basketball and Dominican ended up being a much lower scoring affair inside Conlan Center. On this occasion, the Penguins had the 71-56 edge over the Urban Knights despite an impressive all-around performance from junior guard
Pam Wilmore.
The Penguins began the contest on a 10-2 run over the first six minutes, but sophomore guard
Chanel Stuart ignited an 8-4 response thereafter with a 3-pointer just 12 seconds after checking into the game. Then final minute of the first quarter featured another Stuart triple and junior forward
Sankia Braxton's first basket of the season as Dominican's lead was trimmed to 14-10 by the start of the second.
After the teams traded baskets to start the quarter, back-to-back conversions in the paint by Wilmore and senior guard
Josselyn Morris brought ART U to within three at 21-18, but a 12-6 push by the Penguins had them hovering around a double-digit lead moving into the final minute. However, graduate student guard
Tayler Bennett hit a jumper with 19 seconds left to cut the halftime score to a manageable 33-26 with Dominican on top.
Though the Knights whittled the margin down to five points on multiple occasions early in the second half, the Penguins used a 10-2 surge midway through and eventually went up by 14 with under two minutes left. Junior guard/forward
Lily Perkins and Stuart contributed to a 5-0 end to the third quarter, but Dominican would regain its momentum with six of the fourth quarter's first eight points scored. Though a 6-2 run by Academy of Art had the difference within single digits at the four-minute mark, the home team held on for the 71-56 final.
The result moved the Urban Knights to 5-9 overall and 3-7 in PacWest play. Wilmore finished with a team-best 16 points plus six rebounds, four assists, and four steals to lead ART U to its seventh straight game with 10+ steals. Perkins added nine points and nine rebounds while Stuart led the bench attack with eight points.
Though NCAA Division II leading scorer Jerusha Paine was held three points under her season's scoring average at a game-high 23 points, Dominican improved to 7-9 on the year and 4-6 in conference action.
Academy of Art will be back in action at Kezar Pavilion this Sunday, Jan. 19 with No. 11 Hawaii Pacific in town.
