ART U Drops Double Overtime Heart-Breaker

SAN FRANCISCO – On a cold and foggy day in the Presidio, the Urban Knights got out to an early lead on a goal by sophomore forward Baylie Christensen, but the Argonauts rallied for a pair of goals to take the 2-1 victory in Friday's non-conference matchup.

Both teams remained scoreless after the first half, although the Urban Knights had a fantastic opportunity on goal in the final seconds. Sophomore forward Brooklyn Morera headed-on a throw-in to junior midfielder Sydney Cooke who dribbled the ball to the top right corner of the penalty box. Cooke lobbed in a beautiful cross to senior forward Jenny Wittor, but the Argonaut keeper met the cross at the top of the goal box and Wittor was unable to get a clean touch on it. The ball hit the left post, rolled on the goalline, bounced off the left post, and ended in the keeper's grasp just before Cooke could follow up for an open shot on net.

ART U finally broke through two minutes later, in the 47th minute, with Christensen's second goal of the season. Morera found space in the right corner of the field and crossed in a perfectly placed ball to the top of the goal box. Christensen leapt in the air and redirected the ball with a tremendous header to the far lef20256t side of the net. The assist by Morera ties her with Cooke for the team lead with three.

NDNU equalized in the 61st minute despite a tremendous effort by junior goalkeeper Lara Pflicke, who fended off a pair of shots from inside the goal box before the third attempt found the back of the net. NDNU kept the pressure on and recorded six more shots by the end of regulation, but Pflicke and the ART U defenses protected the 1-1 tie. Pflicke ended the match with eight saves, which tied her season high.

ART U defended the overtime period well, only allowing two shots, however, the second was the game winner. Samantha Sanchez ripped a ball from nearly 30 yards out and slotted it right under the crossbar, just out of Pflicke's reach, forcing the Urban Knights to drop the 2-1 double-overtime decision.

Academy of Art closes out their non-conference schedule with a 4-2-1 record. The Urban Knights will now begin PacWest play with Azusa Pacific on Oct. 3 at Paul Goode Field, starting at 10:30 a.m.
