KAILUA, Hawaii -- Academy of Art took an early lead in this West Regional rematch, but strong singles play from Hawaii Pacific overtook the Urban Knights who fell 4-2 Tuesday afternoon at Kailua Racquet Club.
After not winning a single doubles set in their last meeting, Academy of Art started strong with a 6-2 win from seniors
Alma Thell-Lenntorp and
Klara Thell-Lenntorp over Elodie Busson and Elisa Elhadj. ART U clinched doubles and went out to a 1-0 lead when junior
Mariacristina Andrisani and freshman
Sofia Ragona defeated Debora Echeverria and Heloise Le Normand 6-3.
HPU launched into their comeback quickly, winning the first three singles matches before Ragona secured a singles point for ART U with a 7-6, 6-3 victory over Sarah Ikioka. The Sharks still held a 3-2 lead, but the Urban Knights threatened when both A. Thell-Lenntorp and Andrisani won their second sets. Both their sets were tied 1-1 and if they both won the final set, ART U would clinch the match and punch their ticket to Nationals. A. Thell-Lenntorp kept it close the entire third set and battled every point, but in the end Elhadj came out on top to give HPU the 4-2 victory.
With the loss in the West Regionals, Academy of Art women's tennis ends their season with a 14-6 record. The Urban Knights will look ahead to the off season to prepare for the 2019-2020 season.Â
