Academy of Art Triumphs Over Sonoma State On Senior Day

SAN FRANCISCO – From an emotional Senior Day ceremony with family and friends to intense indoor action to domination by Academy of Art on the outdoor courts, Friday's women's tennis match between No. 9 ART U and No. 33 Sonoma State truly had it all. Tied 2-2 after the first three singles matches had finished inside, the Urban Knights claimed a 5-2 victory after taking the final three singles pairings all in straight sets on the Bay Club SF Tennis rooftop courts freshly dry from a day of rain.

Starting with doubles on three indoor courts due to inclement weather outside, the senior duo of No. 2 Alma Thell-Lenntorp and Klara Thell-Lenntorp made short work of No. 36 Jensyn Warren and Carolyn Brooner, claiming a 6-2 win with their mother and previous coach looking on. The doubles second position was left unfinished as junior Mariacristina Andrisani and freshman Sofia Ragona clinched the doubles point after topping their opponents, Jenna DeTurk and Hannah Highsmith, by the same 6-2 score.

As the rooftop courts were still drying off, the first three singles matches began on the same three indoor courts and all would have their share of drama. Alma Thell-Lenntorp was the first to finish after she battled for a 7-6 first-set win on a 7-5 tiebreaker before putting away Clarisa Colling 6-3 in the second set, furthering the ART U career singles wins record to 63.

19537The Seawolves, however, came roaring back with three-set victories in the other two pairings. No. 22 Jensyn Warren and No. 27 Klara Thell-Lenntorp exchanged tiebreaker wins in the first two sets with Warren's 7-6 opener coming on an 8-6 final and Thell-Lenntorp coming back with a 7-6 second set following her 7-5 result. Warren rallied late and ended up taking the final set 6-2, mirroring what happened in the second position where Carolyn Brooner outlasted Taisiia Andrieieva 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.

Moving upstairs to the roof for the second round of singles action, Academy of Art imposed its will to win. SSU would hold marginal early leads in each contest, but the Knights did not end up relinquishing a set in each instance. Andrisani remained steady in a 6-3, 6-2 victory over DeTurk before Ragona and senior Paula Alcantara finished in nearly the same moment. Ragona put away Carlina Alfonsin 7-5, 6-3 and Alcantara closed the day with strong emotion after her 6-4, 6-4 win over Highsmith.

The victory, Academy of Art's fourth consecutive versus West Region opponents, puts the Urban Knights' record at 10-4. Sonoma State drops to 9-6 with the loss.

In the first of ART U's final two regular season matches, the Urban Knights will travel to San Rafael to take on Dominican this Sunday, Apr. 7 in an 11 a.m. start.
