KEIZER, Ore. -- Academy of Art out-hit Corban in both games of Friday's doubleheader, including 13 hits in game one's 6-4 victory to make four straight games with double digit hits, but the Warriors overcame the strong offense in game two to force a split.
"The game is made up of three parts, pitching, offense, and defense," said head coach
Dan McDermott. "The last couple weeks we have been swinging the bats and actually out-hitting opponents. Delgadillo and Smith are two of the finest hitters in the region, but they can't carry the whole team."
Game One: ART U 6, CU 4
The Urban Knights were on the board early after senior second baseman
Elijah Smith was driven in by sophomore outfielder
Noah Daubin. Daubin stroked a single to left field for his 16th run batted in and 1-0 ART U lead. Corban came back in the bottom half with a pair of runs on a double play and a single to the left side, taking their first lead at 2-1. Smith started the third with a knock through the left side before Daubin came up with his second hit of the day. Senior catcher
Zak May walked to load the bases and senior utility
Donnie Gardiner singled to center field to bring in Smith. The Knights added one in the sixth to make it a 4-2 game, but a two-run home run by Corban evened it up.
A scoreless seventh with two strikeouts from senior pitcher
Gonzo Rios ended up earning him his fifth win when in the top of the eighth ART U brought two across. Junior closer
Galen Manhard came on to close it out and did so with ease, striking out two while only allowing a single base-runner for his seventh save and a 6-4 ART U win.
Game Two: CU 6, ART U 3
The Warriors struck first in game two, bringing home two runs in the second. Junior outfielder
Thomas Delgadillo led off the third with a double to right center to push his hit-streak 13 which ties the longest hit-streak in program history. Smith scored Delgadillo and put the Knights on the board with a ground-out to second to make it a 2-1 game. The Warriors went up 5-2 by the fourth, but ART U got one back on Daubin's sacrifice fly that brought in Smith. CU added their final run in the sixth and took a 6-3 lead where the game would stay.
Junior pitcher
Jayson Summers had a strong showing out of the pen, striking out a career high five batters in 2.2 innings pitched. Junior third baseman
Fabian Barcena and Delgadillo both had a pair of hits and for the fourth straight game Academy of Art out-hit their opponents.
"We need to be better at situational hitting to capitalize on our base-runners," commented McDermott. "It was great to win the opening game of the series and we are looking forward to our doubleheader tomorrow."
Following the split day, Academy of Art moves to 15-25 overall. The Urban Knights will close out their non-conference series with another doubleheader tomorrow starting at noon, when Delgadillo will look to further cement himself in the ART U record books and claim the longest hit-streak in program history.
