Doubleheader Features Pair of Walkoff Wins

OAKLAND, Calif. -- On a day filled with dramatic finishes, Academy of Art swept the doubleheader against Holy Names with an extra innings win in game one and a walkoff home run by junior shortstop Justin Summers in the final half inning of game two on Saturday at Laney College.

Game 1: ART U 3, HNU 2
Senior pitcher Angel Mora took the mound for the Urban Knights and had a one, two, three first that he ended with a strikeout. The Hawks put across one run in the bottom half of the second and another in the fifth to take a 2-0 lead, but senior pitcher Gonzo Rios held them there in another exceptional relief appearance, throwing 5.1 innings with zero runs and six strikeouts.

ART U got on the board in the seventh after senior outfielder Taj Dawson singled to left then made his way to third on a walk and stolen base. It would be senior first baseman Josh Carlin to drive him in with a single to left center to cut the deficit to one. Junior outfielder Thomas Delgadillo led the next inning off with a triple he smoked to deep right center. Senior catcher Zak May knocked him in next batter with a sac fly to collect his team leading 13th run batted in of the season. The Hawks threatened in the ninth and placed a runner 90 feet away, but Rios continued to deal and struck out the final hitter of the inning to strand two runners. The game was pushed into extra innings, but the Urban Knights loaded the bases with no outs in the 10th and Mora scorched a ball to third for a game winning base hit.

Game 2: ART U 2, HNU 1
The second game was as much a pitchers duel as the first with both starters throwing four scoreless frames. On ART U's side, senior pitcher Mason Verhees came out looking dominant, striking out six of the first nine batters he faced. The Hawks plated their first run of the game in the fifth, but the Urban Knights tied the game in the sixth when senior utility Donnie Gardiner came in with a clutch pinch hit appearance. Gardiner drove a single to right field to score senior second baseman Elijah Smith and tie the game at one.

Verhees shutdown the Hawks in the seventh, retiring the side in order, to give ART U a chance at a two walkoff day. The bottom half of the inning did not last long as Summers blasted the second pitch of the inning over the left field wall for his first career home run, giving ART U a 3-2 victory and their second walkoff in as many games.

Following the doubleheader sweep Academy of Art improves to 11-6 overall and 3-3 in conference. The Urban Knights will conclude their series with the Hawks tomorrow at Laney College starting at noon.
