IRVINE, Calif. -- In the second meeting between ART U and Concordia, the Urban Knights were the superior shooters and rebounders, but fell 93-83 in Thursday night's PacWest rematch in the CU Arena.
After starting the game evenly matched, junior forward
Andrija Blatancic opened up the game in a big way, scoring the first eight points of the night for ART U.
Blatancic continued his standout season and tied his career high in points with 33 while shooting 15-21 from the field to also set a career high in field goals made. The junior forward finished the game with nine rebounds, two assists, and brings his points per game to 20.6.
The Knights jumped ahead 10-8 with 15:31 left to play in the half when junior forward
Lake Del Mar came in off the bench and finished a layup. ART U's bench out performed CUI's and outscored them 26-17.
The Knights trailed the Eagles 21-18 when senior guard
Cobe Williams drove down the court on back to back plays and drained two three-pointers in a row. Junior guard
Nemanja Kovacevic added another three to bring ART U's lead to 27-23.
But the Eagles reclaimed the lead and extended it by nine with 6:34. As the first half came to a close the Urban Knights slowly chipped at CUI's lead. With 1:15 left in the half, sophomore guard
Stefan Milivojevic sank a three-pointer to bring the Knights within five.
A buzzer beating layup from senior guard
Cole Morgan cut the margin to just one, and ART U headed to the locker room down 43-42. The Knights finished the half shooting 53.1% from the fields and a perfect 4-4 from beyond the arc. C. Williams was a huge contributor to the Urban Knights three-point percentage. The senior shot 3-4 from three point range and finished the game with 11 points, five assists, and three rebounds.
The battle picked up where it left off early in the second half, and no team led by more than four, until the Eagles went on a run and extended their lead 52-45 with 17 minutes left to play. Academy of Art fought back, and with a jumper by sophomore guard
Dante Williams brought the score to 52-49. D. Williams continued to be a key figure in the Urban Knights offense, and finished with eight points, two rebounds, and an assist.
The Eagles were up 70-59 when back-to-back shots from Blatancic narrowed the lead to 70-63 with 6:10 left to play. Another big play by junior forward
Victor Ruiz de Carranza put the score at 73-66 and the comeback looked to be underway. But ART U could not make up the deficit and fell 93-83 to the Eagles.
Despite the loss, ARTU finished the game out-shooting the Eagles from the field and three point range, shooting 55.6% and 45.6% respectively, leading them to their highest point total of the season. Academy of Art also out-rebounded CUI 33-29.
ART U's conference record moves to an even 6-6 and their overall to 6-11, as they travel to San Diego to face Point Loma on Jan. 26 at 4 p.m.
