SAN FRANCISCO -- 99 minutes of scoreless soccer showcased the Urban Knight's solid defenses, but a golden goal by Biola in overtime caused ART U to drop the match 1-0.
"If we defend with the balance of intensity and patience that we did today we can get a result against anyone," said head coach
Chris King. "We still have some work to do to sort out our offense against higher level opponents, but our grit and determination are apparent in every situation."
The determination started early in the first half when the Urban Knights defended against four shots in the opening 12 minutes. ART U came back and launched a counterattack of their own when freshman forward
Baylie Christensen headed a ball to force a save from the Eagle's goalkeeper.
Academy of Art put on a dazzling display of defense in the 23rd minute, when senior goalkeeper
Morgan Wirz made a diving save to rob a goal. Then less than a minute later on a corner kick sophomore forward
Alyssa Rasmussen feigned goalkeeper and saved a would be tie breaking goal by heading it out just before it crossed the goal-line.
The second half moved along similar to the first with both teams having opportunities but never finishing. Academy of Art took five shots in the half to bring their total to seven at the end of regulation. ART U's defense fended off another nine shots including four saves by Wirz to keep the game scoreless and put it into overtime.
It looked like overtime would be over just four minutes after it started when freshman midfielder
Brooklyn Morera ripped a shot from the top right of the box that barely missed high by inches.
Six minutes later after 100 minutes of scoreless soccer, Biola would not miss. The Eagles ended the game with the golden goal to defeat Academy of Art 1-0.
"Our team has continued to rise to each challenge they face," said King. "I'm sure this will fire them up that much more."
Still only the second loss in eight games, the Urban Knights are 6-3 overall and 1-2 in the PacWest conference. ART U will take on the Sea Lions of Point Loma next, on Saturday Sept. 29 at 2:30 p.m.
