RIVERSIDE, Calif. – After falling in the series' first contest, ART U looked to exact revenge on No. 20 California Baptist in Wednesday's doubleheader. However, a late CBU comeback in game one, and a strong offensive-showing showing in the second, ultimately gave the Lancers a doubleheader sweep.
Â
GAME ONE: CBU 2, ART U 1
Â
It was a pitchers' duel from the get-go in Wednesday's game one of the doubleheader. Junior right-hander
Ben Kaser was locked in from the moment he took to the mound: the Van Nuys, Calif. native put up five zeros on the board before allowing the Lancers to push across a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Â
Opposing the Urban Knights was CBU's Andrew Bash who tossed a perfect two innings to begin the contest. However, ART U took their first lead of the game and the series in the fourth when senior catcher
Marciano Reichel came up with a 2-out RBI single to drive in senior outfielder
Jackson Murphy who reached on a single earlier in the inning.
Â
ART U's advantage held through the fifth as Kaser delivered a shut-down inning after the Knights scored. However, the Lancers managed to break his scoreless streak with a pair of runs off of two hits and three walks. CBU's 2-1 lead was held up as the Urban Knights were unable to mount a comeback despite getting the tying run aboard with two outs in the ninth.
Â
GAME TWO: CBU 8, ART U 0
Â
California Baptist got on the board early and often in game three of the series and game two of the doubleheader. The Lancers batted around in the bottom of the first, scoring five runs off of five hits including three-consecutive doubles and a 2-run home run from John Glenn. CBU continued to tack on, scoring in each of the first four innings, eventually taking an 8-0 lead in the fourth.
Â
However, senior right-hander
Luke Lacy then entered the game for what could possibly be his final collegiate appearance. He made it count however, as he put a stop to all the Lancers' scoring, going 2.0 innings, allowing no runs off of only two hits, one walk, and one strikeout.
Â
Unable to push a run across, ART U fell by the final score of 8-0.
Â
With the two losses, the Urban Knights are now 24-24 overall, and 19-20 in the PacWest. With one more game to go in this series and the 2018 season, Academy of Art will need to win tomorrow's contest if they want to become the first ART U baseball team in program history to finish the season above .500.
Â
The final contest of the series will take place on Thursday, May 3, at 1:00 p.m. You can find the live stats and broadcast
