ART U Triumphs Over CSUSB, Falls To No. 12 CUI In NCAA Regional

IRVINE, Calif. – A truly historic 2018 Academy of Art University Softball season came to an end Friday as the Urban Knights' seniors, infielder Samantha Klune and pitcher/utility Brenna Mitchell, each powered home runs to send the team to a 6-1 victory over Cal State San Bernardino and stave off elimination from the NCAA Division II West Regional Tournament, but a 4-2 loss in a rematch with No. 12 Concordia served as the final stop of ART U's "30 Bus."

GAME 1 – ART U 6, CSUSB 1
In a game where both teams where a loss meant their final out of the year, Academy of Art made an early move to set the tone. A bunt single by sophomore outfielder Gabi Hirsch came on the first pitch of the contest and shortly thereafter Mitchell sent a ball beyond the left field fence for her fifth home run of the season.

17292The 2-0 lead was welcomed by freshman pitcher Cecilia Lopez (10-7), who navigated her way through runners in scoring position in each of the first two innings. In the third inning, freshman infielder Jayda Alaan opened with a single up the middle, took second on a wild pitch, and it was Klune who brought her home with a single into the centerfield gap. Though the Coyotes made a smart defensive decision to get the lead runner on a play two batters later, an infield error surrendered another run before the inning finished.

With the scoreboard now reading 4-0 Knights, the bottom of the third was highlighted by freshman catcher Alyssa Brundage tying Elise Oldham and Jayme Stewart's ART U single-season record for runners caught stealing. She nabbed her 12th runner of the year following a leadoff single and the four-run advantage held into the bottom of the fourth.

It was a leadoff double by Jessica Brown that got CSUSB going as the bases were soon loaded which forced Academy of Art to call upon freshman pitcher/utility Brooke Larsen (22-4) in relief. She surrendered a sacrifice fly, but nothing further and it was 4-1 ART U moving into the late innings.

17294After Alaan was hit by a pitch to start the fifth inning, Klune smashed a ball to the deepest part of Eagles Field over the fence in center. The homer, a two-run shot and the senior's fifth of the season, furthered the Knights' lead to 6-1 and there it would stay despite pairs of runners on in both the fifth and seventh frames. Larsen was extremely effective and she was rewarded with another record broken as she became the first player in Academy of Art history to register 22 wins in a single season after ART U stayed alive with a 6-1 victory.

GAME 2 – CUI 4, ART U 2
Matched up with Concordia starter Callie Nunes (25-3) for the second consecutive day, the Urban Knights managed to break through in the second inning when Larsen launched a leadoff double to left, was bunted to third, and junior infielder Brenna Youngquist drove her in on a hard-hit single to shortstop.

The 1-0 lead would not last, however, as a two-out Eagles rally came in the bottom of the second and featured four hits including two run-scoring singles by Mckinsey Thorpe and Ryann Furguson. Both of the games starters, Nunes and Lopez, remained in to start their respective third innings, but neither would complete those frames. Nunes was lifted after Hirsch started with a single, reached third on a bunt and a wild pitch, then came home on a squeeze bunt by Mitchell which tied the game 2-2. In the bottom of the third, a single and two errors loaded the bases for CUI and Mitchell was then called upon to get out of a critical spot with no outs. Continuing her recent success in the circle, the senior was lights out, getting three outs on seven pitches and going on to throw another scoreless inning in the fourth.

Academy of Art loaded the bases themselves against reliever Grayson Harvey (15-8) in the fifth, but they too were held and the game moved into the bottom of the fifth still tied 2-2. Larsen took the ball from Mitchell in that inning and a two-out run-scoring infield single by Thorpe ended up serving as a huge hit to put the Eagles ahead 3-2.

17293The Knights looked to possibly mount their own comeback in the sixth when, with two outs and a runner at second, Lopez slashed a ball down the right field line, but it was dramatically caught by a diving Michelle Lieng for the out. CUI added one more run in the sixth on a single by Amanda Gjertsen and, a clean seventh inning for Harvey spelled the end of ART U's memorable 2018 season in the wake of the 4-2 final score.

The final day of Mitchell and Klune's respective collegiate careers were extremely productive. Mitchell went 2-for-5 with a home run, three runs batted in, a run scored, and two walks as a hitter while delivering 2.0 key scoreless relief innings against Concordia in which she allowed one hit, walked none, and struck out one. She completes her senior year on a 16.0 scoreless innings streak and settles among the program's top three in career earned run average (3.17), wins (35), complete games (33), shutouts (7), strikeouts (274), innings pitched (386.0), and games started (58). Klune finished the day 3-for-7 with a home run, three RBIs, and a run scored. Klune finishes her four-year career among the program's top five in doubles (33), RBIs (94), total bases (258), and games played (192).

Larsen tossed a total of 5.2 innings in the doubleheader, earning her 22nd win following 3.2 scoreless frames with one hit allowed, three walks, and five strikeouts in the first contest. As a hitter, she went 2-for-6 with a double and two runs scored. At the top of the lineup, Hirsch went 4-for-8 with two runs scored, Alaan ended 2-for-6 with two runs scored and her 30th hit-by-pitch of the season, and Youngquist added a 2-for-6 day with one RBI as well.

With numerous milestones achieved this season, Academy of Art finishes its most memorable campaign in program history with an overall record of 40-18.
