ART U Splits Doubleheader, Wins Series on Senior Day

OAKLAND, Calif. – In the final day of home games for the Urban Knights, 12 seniors were celebrated and honored for their hard work throughout their careers. Although ART U split the day, they took the series three games to one, for their second-consecutive series victory.

Game One: HPU 9, ART U 3

Before the games began, all 12 seniors: Luke Lacy, Chris Petrosie, Kyle McGraw, Izac Bauer, Michael Maleski, Marciano Reichel, Alex Fernandez, Taylor Martin, Brennan Mauchline, Evan Ray, Chris Rost, and Jackson Murphy took part in a senior day ceremony, walking down the first base line to handshake and hug their teammates for the last time at home.

Senior pitcher Alex Fernandez went right to work, getting the first two batters of the day in quick succession. However, the Sharks would rally with two out and they put two runs on the board before the end of the inning. Junior third basemen Robert "Gio" Villanueva led off the third with a base-hit up the middle. Villanueva would score three batters later on a fielding error by the first basemen when junior infielder Elijah Smith got caught in a run-down.

On the other side of the ball, junior pitcher Mason Verhees took over the pitching duties in the second. Verhees would pitch over the next 5.2 innings, allowing three runs (all unearned) while striking out 4.

The Urban Knights would take a 3-2 lead in the bottom half of the sixth after a trio of hits, including a double by senior outfielder Izac Bauer.

However, HPU would rally in the last three innings, taking the the lead and holding onto it, defeating ART U 9-3.

Game Two: ART U 6, HPU 2

Junior first basemen Angel Mora went straight to work upholding his team-leading batting average (.321) with a single into left field in the first. Senior outfielder Jackson Murphy would follow suit, driving a ball through the six hole to advance Mora. Bauer, determined to send the seniors out on a win, crushed an elevated fastball over the top of the net in left field, driving in three runs, which would be all senior pitcher Chris Petrosie would need.

Petrosie made it through two innings of work without letting a run across. In the top of the third, the Sharks would score their only two runs of the game on a home run from Ryan Torres-Torioka. Petrosie would cruise through the rest of the game and improve his record to 4-1. He has now tossed back-to-back complete-games. His final line looked like this: 7.0 innings pitched, two earned runs, four walks, and four strikeouts.

In response to the Sharks' home run in the third, Bauer would add on even more runs batted in with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Mora in the bottom of the same frame. Bauer would end his stellar senior day performance with three hits, four RBI, and two runs scored. The Urban Knights would add on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth on three base hits in a row and a sacrifice fly to ensure their 6-2 victory.

With the split-day, ART U moves to 24-21 overall, with a 19-17 record in conference-play. The Urban Knights are set to depart on their final road-trip and series of the 2018 season beginning on Tuesday, May 1 against No. 19-ranked California Baptist.
