Urban Knights Drop Finale, Take Series From UH Hilo

OAKLAND, Calif. – After 10-consecutive wins at home, UH Hilo snapped the Urban Knights' home winning streak as they defeated the Knights in the series finale 4-1. Despite the loss, ART U came away with their fourth series win of the season after taking three games from the Vulcans over the weekend.

UH Hilo jumped out to an early lead on Monday night as they quickly scored a pair of runs off of the Urban Knights' starter: junior right-hander Gonzo Rios. The Vulcans took a 3-0 lead two innings later when UHH's most dangerous hitter (Phillip Steering) hit a solo home run over the left-center field wall. It was his third homer of the series.

The Urban Knights looked to respond in the bottom of the fourth, getting runners to first and second with just one out. However, their efforts were thwarted two pitches later as the next two batters flew out and grounded out respectively on the first pitch of their at-bats.

After tossing 4.2 innings, giving up three earned runs off of seven hits, Rios was replaced by senior righty Luke Lacy with two outs in the fifth. Lacy was tasked with keeping a runner at third base from scoring and he did just that, striking out the batter on six pitches. The Valencia, Calif. native ended up finishing the game with 4.1 innings pitched while only allowing one earned run off of three hits while striking out five.

ART U finally got on the board in the bottom of the eighth when a walk and a stolen base from junior infielder Elijah Smith set up a run batted in for junior infielder Josh Carlin who hit an RBI infield single. However, their rally was cut short after a double play and a fly out.

The Vulcans managed to respond with a run of their own in the top of the ninth, but the Urban Knights could not mount a comeback in the bottom of the inning despite sending five batters to the plate.

With the loss, ART U falls 21-20 overall and 16-16 in the PacWest and their 10-game home winning streak (which dated back to February 24 against Fresno Pacific) comes to an end. However, the Urban Knights will look to begin a new streak when they welcome in Hawaii Pacific on April 26 for their final home series of the season.
