RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Two evenly-played quarters had the Urban Knights within striking distance of California Baptist, but after fortunes changed dramatically in the third quarter, the Lancers went on to win the Pacific West Conference matchup 92-62 on Monday evening inside the CBU Events Center. Redshirt senior forward
Pre'Franz Dominick posted a game-high 28 points (17 in the first half) despite the loss.
A pair of 3-pointers by sophomore forward
Ines Medina and Dominick helped contribute to an 8-2 lead for Academy of Art out of the gate, but a 12-2 Lancer response followed and gave the home team their first advantage. CBU had pushed a five-point margin by the end of the first quarter yet ART U would not be fazed as senior forward
Helena Orts knocked down a shot from distance less than a minute into the second.
Each team finished with 20 total points in the second quarter and, despite a 34-26 difference favoring California Baptist midway through, the score was tied 39-39 with just under three minutes left. Five quick points late gave the Lancers a 44-39 lead at the half and that momentum carried into the third where CBU started by converting 10 of its first 12 shots to fuel a 19-2 surge.
When the dust had settled on the third quarter, California Baptist was ahead 72-43 and, though the Knights continued to hit from distance, the end result was a 92-62 victory for the home team.
The result puts ART U's overall record at 6-18 and 5-11 in conference play. Dominick had her third-highest scoring effort of the season with 28 points (including a career-high four 3-pointers) plus seven rebounds and two steals. Orts delivered her eighth double-double of the year with 14 points and 11 rebounds, redshirt senior guard
Jazzlynn Brewster finished with eight points, five rebounds, and four assists, and Medina contributed five steals.
CBU rises to 11-11 on the year and 8-6 in the PacWest. Five Lancers posted double-figure scoring performances led by 26 points and 10 rebounds from Blaysen Varnadoe in 27 minutes off the bench.
With its Southern California roadtrip now complete, Academy of Art returns to the Bay Area for the remainder of the regular season. A stretch of three of the next four games at home begins with Hawaii Pacific on Monday, Feb. 12 at 5:30 p.m. back inside Kezar Pavilion.
