SAN DIEGO – Efficient Point Loma shooting was Academy of Art's downfall on Saturday evening as the Sea Lions rode a 56.3 percent shooting percentage to victory over the Urban Knights.
Â
In the first half, PLNU got out to a quick lead and did not let up, ultimately going 7-for-12 from beyond the 3-point arc while landing 59.3 percent of their shots overall. The Sea Lions' defense was dominant as well as no ART U player scored more than one field goal.
Â
However, the Knights began the second half with more intensity and immediately went on a 5-0 to begin the period. The Urban Knights continued to chip away at the deficit and eventually came as close as 16 points at the 15:35 mark (50-34) after completing a 12-3 run. However, Point Loma took control from there and took as much as a 35-point lead. Point Loma's efforts were once again highlighted by their strong shooting, particularly from 3-point land as they scored six more triples.
Â
Academy of Art's largest contributors were senior guard
Uchenna Okeneme and junior guard
Zuri Williams. Okeneme scored a team-high, 14 points and contributed a pair of steals while Z. Williams scored 11 and collected a career-high, four steals.
Â
ART U will now continue their road trip when they head to California Baptist on Monday for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff.
Â
"We are going into Monday playing like it's our last game," said head coach
Julius Barnes. "We realize that there is room for improvement, and we're anxious to go out and have a better performance against CBU."
