Brewster's Career-High, FT Record Not Enough Against FPU

SAN FRANCISCO – Settling a Pacific West Conference rematch at SF State's Main Gym on Thursday evening, Academy of Art and Fresno Pacific needed all 40 minutes to do so. After leading by as many as 12 points late in the third quarter, ART U saw the game change in FPU's favor with an 8-4 swing in the final three minutes leading to the 78-76 final. Along the way, redshirt senior guard Jazzlynn Brewster poured in a career-high 34 points (one off tying the program record) and did so with the most free throws made by an Urban Knight (13) in the program's 10-year history.

Long-range success particularly from Bree Alvarez helped Fresno Pacific jump out to a 13-6 lead, but Brewster's own 3-pointer then sparked a 7-0 burst to make it a one-point game. In a sign of things to come, Brewster would knock down a pair of free throws in the final minute of the first quarter to tie it up 18-18.

The lead changed hands to start the second and soon Alvarez's fifth triple of the contest pushed the visitors ahead 31-26. Using a 3-pointer from redshirt senior forward Pre'Franz Dominick as well as numerous layups, the Knights responded by finishing the first half on an 11-2 run to get them ahead 37-33 at halftime.

16879Remaining in attack mode to start the second half, Brewster and ART U continued to live at the free throw line. Academy of Art would build a six-point lead early in the third and, at one point, used eight consecutive conversions at the foul line to go up 58-46 with a little over a minute left in the quarter. After finishing the third a remarkable 13-of-14 from the free throw line, the Knights led the Sunbirds by 10 moving into the fourth.

A 7-0 start to the final frame put Fresno Pacific back within striking distance and, though Brewster continued to keep her team ahead with her free throw success, an 8-0 surge from FPU tied the game 68-68 with nearly four minutes left. After two more ties thereafter, Alvarez connected on her eighth triple of the game and free throws would later seal the 78-76 win as a layup with three seconds left got Academy of Art only within one point before being forced to foul.

Coming up on its final game of the season, ART U is now 6-21 overall and 5-14 in conference play. Brewster bettered her previous career-high (31 points) set earlier this year by three with 34 points on Thursday. She was 10-for-17 from the field and her 13-for-14 effort at the free throw line passed Zoie Sheng's two times converting 12 for a new school record. She had seven rebounds and four assists as well. Dominick came through with 25 points, nine rebounds, and four steals while sophomore forward Ines Medina stuffed the stat-sheet with six points, six assists, five rebounds, and two steals.

The win keeps FPU's postseason hopes alive as they move to 12-15 on the year and 10-9 in the PacWest, one game back of Dominican (11-8) and Point Loma (11-8). Should the Sunbirds defeat the Penguins this Saturday, they will take the sixth and final spot in the PacWest Conference Tournament. On Thursday, it was Alvarez's 31 points made up of an 8-for-11 performance from long range that propelled Fresno Pacific.

Academy of Art is now set to tip off its Senior Day game this Saturday, hosting Concordia at Notre Dame de Namur's Walter Gleason Gym at 1 p.m. Prior to the contest, seniors Abigail Chavez, Pre'Franz Dominick, Helena Orts, Hayley Pryor, and Jazzlynn Brewster will be ceremoniously honored.
