ART U Defeats NDNU, Keeps Playoff Hopes Alive

BELMONT, Calif. – In a crucial, must-win game for Academy of Art, the team stepped up to the challenge with dominant defense. The Urban Knights set the program record for the least amount of points allowed (44), breaking the former mark of 49 in 2013. Their impressive defense, coupled with a career-high, 30 points from  senior guard Kendall Brown, led ART U to a 75-44 victory over Notre Dame de Namur.

Brown went straight to work in the first half, accounting for 10 of the Urban Knights' first 12 points, with six coming from 3-point range. As aforementioned, Brown would go on to score a career-high, 30 points, going 4-for-6 from beyond the arc and shooting at an astounding, 73% from the field. In the ninth minute of the game, senior guard Uchenna Okeneme hit a jumper to expand the lead to 18-10. The Argonauts would come within six points with just over six minutes to play in the first half, but this was the closest ART U would let the lead shrink. From then on, the Knights took complete control of the game, never letting the margin fall to single digits. ART U would go into the half only conceding a miniscule, 18 points, compared to their 29.

Academy of Art struck first in the second half: junior guard Kiel Long drove into the lane for a layup which was assisted by junior guard Cobe Williams who finished with three assists overall. Junior guard Cole Morgan would catch fire in the following minutes, scoring in the paint, then putting up a 3-pointer just 15 seconds later to extend the lead even further to 36-21. The rest of the game was all ART U as they never conceded more than three points in a row without answering back. The Urban Knights saw their biggest lead of the game (35 points) in the last 1:30 of play when Brown sunk a pair of free throws to put them up 74-39. Academy of Art would continue their defensive dominance to take the win 75-44.

With this defensive, record-breaking win, the Urban Knights move into a two-way tie for sixth-place with Chaminade in the PacWest with just two games remaining. If they maintain their placement in the standings, they would go on to be the first Academy of Art men's basketball team to compete in the conference tournament.

ART U will now face off against Fresno Pacific on Thursday, February 22 at 7:30 p.m. for their second-to-last regular season game.
