SAN FRANCISCO -- With an
Andrija Blatancic spin move and a
Cobe Williams to
Cameron Niven pick and roll, the Urban Knights end the year on a win.
ART U took down Hawaii Pacific 73-60 on the back of junior forward Blatancic's career high 26 points and 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. The big man combination of Blatancic and senior center Niven accumulated 42 points in a game that saw the Knight's outscore the Sharks an incredible 58-8 in the paint.
Â
The impact of Niven and Blatancic was immediate, scoring the first eight points for ART U, which set the score at 11-8 in favor of HPU. With 10:35 in the first, HPU put together an 11-0 run to expand their lead to 22-8. The Urban Knights ended the streak on a driving layup by redshirt sophomore guard
Dante Williams. Back to back layups from junior guard
Victor Ruiz de Carranza and Blatancic shed the Shark's lead down to single figures.
Academy of Art battled the remainder of the period and cut HPU's lead to just one as the half ended. Carranza made a huge block in the final seconds to ensure the HPU lead did not go any further.
Â
The second half started with a dose of deja vu, as Blatancic and Niven combined for the Knight's first eight points again, this time to more favorable results. Blatancic ended the initial scoring spree with a successful three point play to thrust ART U into the lead 41-40. This would be the final lead change of the game.
Â
Academy of Art continued to dominate in the paint while also achieving a season high field goals made (32) at their highest shooting percentage (58.2) of the season. By the end of the game the Urban Knights led by 13 and put the year to rest with a 73-60 victory.
For the second time in as many games ART U had four players reach double digit scoring: Blatancic, Niven, Carranza, and senior guard C. Williams. Cobe paired a season high six assists with his 11 points. Carranza continued to stuff the stat sheet, falling two rebounds short of a double-double while gathering 12 points, four assists, three steals, and two blocks in the process.
After winning the last game of 2018, Academy of Art improves to 2-8 overall and 2-3 in conference. The Urban Knights will enjoy New Years Day off, before taking on undefeated No. 20 Chaminade on Jan. 2.
