Knights Nearly Notch First Win

SAN FRANCISCO -- In a game of season highs and broken hearts, Academy of Art men's basketball team dropped a nail bitter to Concordia 82-79 in overtime.

However, the tough overtime loss leaves the Urban Knights with aspirations, as the team accomplished a season high 79 points and 11 steals.

The game started with senior center Cameron Niven finishing a layup inside the paint to tip off a 12-0 run to start the game and secure an early lead. Concordia gained momentum with nine unanswered points to bring the score to 12-9 with 14:01 left in the half.

Sophomore guard Luka Radovic off the bench to give ART U its first points in almost three minutes shifting momentum back to the Urban Knights.

The momentum carried ART U through the first half, and with just over eight minutes of play remaining the Urban Knights outscored the Eagles 11-2 to take a 25-11 lead.

The run saw three different ART U players sink shots from beyond the arc, including sophomore guard Stefan Milivojevic, who went 3-3 in three-pointers, and 4-5 from the field in the first half alone.

With 4:02 left the Urban Knights took an 18 point lead, their biggest of the game, from yet another three from Milivojevic, bringing the score to 36-18.

The minutes ticked away and the Urban Knights kept a double digit lead to end the half ahead of the Eagles 40-30.

Momentum teetered back and forth between the two teams in the second half. Concordia knocked down the first few shots of the half bringing the score within three.

Niven was first on the board for Academy of Art in the second half. Niven went into today's game fifth overall in scoring for ART U, averaging 5.1 points per game this season. The native of Castro Valley ended with nine points and three rebounds.

Quickly, the game was tied at 41-41 after two good free-throw attempts by the Eagles with 17:20 left to play.

ART U's lead jumped to nine after two layups from sophomore guard Dante Williams to put the score at 53-44 with 11:45 remaining.

The Urban Knights held the lead until the Eagles went on an eight point run, tying the score at 59 with just 6:02 to play.

Tension's rose for the Urban Knights as Concordia took their first lead of the game 60-59, but with just 1:05 remiang ART U took a 69-68 lead on a clutch layup by junior forward Andrija Blatancic. The lead was extended when Concordia sent senior guard Zuri Williams to the line for two with just 34 seconds remaining. Z. Williams sunk both free throws to increase the lead 71-68. With only 25 seconds left on the clock, Concordia hit a deep ball to tie the game at 71 and force overtime.

Concordia struck first in overtime, reclaiming the lead, but the Knights answered back with another lay up from D. Williams. The score sat 73-73 with just under three minutes to play. The Eagles pulled away by six, but Milivojevic narrowed the lead to 79-76 on a trio of free throws. CUI narrowly edged past ART U, and not even a three from senior guard Cobe Williams in the final second was enough to capture the Knight's first win.
