Deans Scores Late Goal in Close Loss

SAN FRANCISCO -- Academy of Art men's soccer out-shot UC Santa Cruz 16-11 and made a late push on a goal by junior forward Andrew Deans, but it was not enough as ART U dropped the Sunday morning home match 2-1.

Strong defense prevented a shot on either end until the 15th minute when Oliver Hadeen claimed the first shot of the day, unfortunately the sophomore defenders effort was spoiled by the Banana Slugs goalkeeper's save. ART U took seven shots in the first half and held UCSC to only three, however in the 45th minute the Banana Slugs got a ball past sophomore goalkeeper Kris Jensson to go into the half leading 1-0.

Academy of Art continued the consistent attack in the second half and again out-shot their opponent, but despite their limited opportunities UCSC added a second score in the 85th minute with Jacob Myers Norys third goal of the year.

ART U retaliated in the 89th minute on Andrew Deans steal and quick shot from just inside the box that found the back of the net for his second goal of the season. The Urban Knights made a final push on a corner kick in the last minute of the game, but sophomore midfielder Jaret Gil's shot missed high and the match ended with ART U on the wrong end of a 2-1 score.

Deans led the Urban Knights in shots with four including three on goal. Junior midfielder Adrian Cekala and freshman midfielder Edvard Edvarsson followed close behind with three each. Jensson collected four saves bringing his total to 52, second highest in the PacWest.

After the loss, Academy of Art drops to 1-9-2. The Knights will return to PacWest play Tuesday Oct. 16 at 4:30 p.m. against Holy Names in Hayward, California.
