Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Knights Rally To Force Overtime, Fall To Hilo 68-63

HILO, Hawaii – Unfazed by a 10-point deficit in the first half, Academy of Art University women's basketball came all the way back to tie UH Hilo and force overtime inside Hilo Civic Auditorium on Friday night. Redshirt senior forward Pre'Franz Dominick, who was particularly key to start and in the third quarter, posted 26 points and 17 rebounds, but it would not be enough to overcome a final push by the Vulcans who prevailed 68-63 in the extra period.

Dominick converted her first four baskets for eight points in a four-minute span to start and, despite a 7-0 response from Hilo, ART U led 19-16 at the end of the first quarter. The Vulcans, however, fought back and outscored Academy of Art 16-6 in the second frame to assume a 32-25 advantage at halftime.

To start the second half, Dominick regained her offensive rhythm, scoring six of the Knights' first nine points, helping them come to within two points at 37-35. Redshirt senior guard Jazzlynn Brewster, who provided 3-pointers at the end of each of the first two quarters, supplemented Dominick's 12 points with seven of her own in the third.

Hilo still clutched a 47-44 lead moving into the fourth quarter where a 6-2 run midway through brought Academy of Art to within a single point at 51-50. The score was then tied on three occasions thereafter as sophomore forward Ines Medina caught fire from long range. Medina's final 3-pointer, her fifth of the night, came with 51 seconds left and made the score 61-61. Both teams had opportunities at the game-winner in that final stretch, but the shots did not fall and overtime ensued.

Just one point, a Medina free throw, was scored by either side in the three minutes of overtime before Hilo made their move with a 3-pointer and two free throws. Although Brewster made it a one-possession game with 44 seconds left, the Vulcans essentially iced their 68-63 victory with one final basket in the waning moments of the contest.

ART U moves to 2-14 overall and 1-7 in PacWest play with the day's result. Dominick finished with 26 points (12-of-25 shooting from the field) for her fourth-highest scoring output this season and added 17 rebounds (one shy of her career-high). It was a career-high five 3-pointers made for Medina who put up 17 points with four steals and Brewster contributed 16 points plus nine assists.

UH Hilo improves to 4-4 on the year and elevates to 2-3 in conference. The tandem of Safia Sheikh (23 points) and Allie Navarette (22 points, nine rebounds) led the Vulcans, accounting for all seven points in overtime.

With its Hawaii roadtrip complete, Academy of Art returns to San Francisco for a four-game homestand which begins with Dominican on Wednesday, Jan. 10 at 5:30 p.m. back inside Kezar Pavilion.
