Biola Makes Move In 2nd Quarter, Defeats ART U 71-61

SAN FRANCISCO – Up by 10 points at the end of the first quarter, Academy of Art University women's basketball was met with a 24-2 second quarter Biola run and the Urban Knights were unable to finish off a late comeback attempt, falling 71-61 inside Kezar Pavilion on Monday evening. Redshirt senior forward Pre'Franz Dominick continued to thrive with 22 points, 15 rebounds, five steals, and two blocks, but it was not enough to change the momentum after it shifted.

Out of the gate, ART U used two runs to get ahead quickly. From up 5-4, redshirt senior guard Jazzlynn Brewster hit a 3-pointer which sparked a 9-2 surge then, following a triple from the Eagles, the Knights went back to work with eight unanswered points including four from senior forward Helena Orts. BU cut down its deficit with five points in the final 33 seconds of the first quarter, but the lead remained in double figures (24-10) moving to the second.

Biola making three of their first four shots to start the period combined with Academy of Art turnovers to give life to an Eagles comeback. What ensued was a 17-0 run from the end of the first as ART U fell out of its rhythm offensively. Dominick and Brewster each scored what would be just two baskets for the Knights in the quarter and, at the end of what became a 24-2 push, BU led 36-28 at the half.

16764The visitors kept the pressure on in the third, expanding their advantage to 17 points before a 7-0 response led by Dominick and Orts. However, DeMoria White then hit back-to-back triples and the lead ballooned to 19 points in the final minute of the quarter. Biola was up by as many as 24 with just under eight minutes left in the fourth, yet rebuttals of 9-0 and 10-0 came from ART U down the stretch. Time unfortunately ran out on a full comeback for the Knights as BU prevailed 71-61.

Academy of Art drops to 6-16 overall and 5-9 in PacWest play with the loss. Dominick delivered her seventh straight double-double and 13th on the season with 22 points (9-of-20 from the field) and 15 rebounds while tying her career-high with five steals. Brewster contributed 16 points in addition to five rebounds and five assists and Orts had 11 points as well as eight rebounds.

Biola breaks its .500 record coming in at now 10-9 on the year and 7-6 in conference. White proved to be too much to handle from long range where she connected 10 times and finished with 33 points plus five steals.

ART U now looks to its Southern California roadtrip which will feature a rematch with Point Loma on Saturday (Feb. 3) followed by the Knights first pairing with California Baptist on Monday (Feb. 5).
