SAN FRANCISCO – Leading Holy Names 18-8 after the first quarter, Academy of Art University women's basketball was up by 30 roughly 25 minutes into Saturday evening's Pacific West Conference rematch and went on to win 75-50 behind a strong defensive effort inside Kezar Pavilion. Three Urban Knights offered double-doubles including senior forward
Helena Orts, redshirt senior guard
Jazzlynn Brewster, and redshirt senior forward
Pre'Franz Dominick who grabbed a career-high 22 rebounds.
Although neither team scored in the first two minutes, the ART U offense quickly shifted into high gear thereafter as a 14-0 run was led by both Dominick and Orts. Though the Hawks showed signs of life with five quick points, Academy of Art closed the quarter with four straight and turned that into an 11-2 push in the second quarter.
Triples by both senior guard
Hayley Pryor and Brewster continued to push the advantage and a layup by junior center
Mariana Witt in the final seconds of the first half gave ART U a 38-19 lead. An 11-0 surge followed to start the third quarter as the Knights' defense held Holy Names scoreless for over five minutes. Another 3-pointer from Brewster gave Academy of Art its largest advantage of the night, 60-29, at the end of the fourth and, despite a brief run from HNU, the margin remained above 22 the rest of the way before ending with the home team on top 75-50.
The win, Academy of Art's second in a row, improves their overall record to 4-14 and 3-7 in conference play. Orts delivered her second-highest scoring output thus far with 27 points on 12-of-21 shooting from the field and three 3-pointers. A total of 10 rebounds gave her a fourth double-double this season and her second consecutive effort. Dominick had her ninth double-double of the season with 19 points as well as a career-high 22 rebounds (eight offensive) which were the second-highest rebound total in program history behind
Alisa Griggs' record 23 versus Dominican on
Jan. 30, 2012. Brewster posted her second double-double of the year with 12 points and 10 assists plus five steals.
Holy Names drops to 2-14 on the season and 1-7 in the PacWest. Onjalise Carley-Hilliard paced the Hawks with 13 points.
