SAN FRANCISCO – Both Academy of Art and Humboldt State appeared evenly matched from the start, locking heads until overtime where things were finally decided. Despite compiling 13 shots with three Urban Knights collecting three apiece, ART U was unable to break the seal, falling to the Lumberjacks by a final score of 1-0.
The Urban Knights looked strong in the attacking third coming out of the gate in the first half. Junior midfielder
Bobby Gutierrez had a pair of opportunities just under three minutes into the match, getting off back-to-back shots from inside of the box. Although each attempt was blocked, the Riverside, Calif. native remained busy in the opening period, taking all four of ART U's corner kicks (eight total in the match). Back in goal for the second-straight match to begin the season, freshman
Kris Jensson came up with four saves in the first half while facing a total of nine Humboldt State shots.
As the scoreless match shifted into the second period, Academy of Art continued to apply offensive pressure. After only taking four shots in the opening 45 minutes, the Knights rattled off nine more in the second half, including three from junior defender
David Sigurdarson. While ART U did well offensively, the team shined on the defensive-front as well. The Lumberjacks took 10 shots in the second period (two on goal) and every attempt was denied.
The five minutes of overtime were a different story, however. Senior forward
Alex Walsh received the first shot of the period, but his attempt was wide. Soon after, HSU mounted a run deep into the Knights' territory before the ball landed at the feet of Isaiah Dairo. The forward placed it just beyond the reach of newly-entered, junior goalkeeper
Kevin Mendez to end the game.
With the loss to the Lumberjacks, ART U now drops to 0-1-1 on the season. The Urban Knights will be back on Sunday however, to close out the Golden Gate Classic with SF State. Since Academy of Art began hosting this tournament in 2015, the Knights have gone 1-1 with the Gators including a
dramatic, overtime victory two years ago. The two will square off once again at 2:00 p.m. at Negoesco Stadium.
