SAN FRANCISCO – Academy of Art women's soccer had a match full of offensive-intensity against Dominican on Saturday afternoon. However, despite collecting a season-high 13 shots, the Urban Knights could not break through against the Penguins' defense, falling by a score of 0-2.
Â
In the first half, ART U's back line did well to hold back the Penguins' eight attempts at the net. Senior goalkeeper
Maggie Alikpala-Wilson collected four saves, but could not hold back Mariah Meza's shot in the 33rd-minute. Meza was a big offensive-force for Dominican in the opening period, taking four shots in total. The Urban Knights collected five shots in the opening half including two from freshman midfielder
Sydney Cooke (one on-goal).
Â
Trailing by just one goal entering the second half, Academy of Art turned up the intensity on offense, compiling eight more attempts at the net. However, the Penguins back line let nothing through, denying the Knights every time. Dominican eventually put an insurance goal on the board in the 78th-minute, giving them a two-score advantage. Junior midfielder
Alice Michell put together one more attempt at the net in the 88th-minute, but her fourth shot of the half ricocheted off of a defender.
Â
ART U's offensive numbers were spread throughout the roster including four from Michell and two from: Cooke, senior defender
Laney Haviland, and senior midfielder
Abigail Chavez. Alikapala-Wilson faced a total of 15 shots before being replaced in the 84th-minute, matching her second-highest save total of the season (seven).
Â
Academy of Art's next match comes on Tuesday, September 26 when they head to Division III, UC Santa Cruz. Afterwards, they will jettison off to Hawaii for three matches in the Aloha State.Â
