Concordia Takes Series With Two Wins Sunday

IRVINE, Calif. – Academy of Art University softball's PacWest Conference Southern California roadtrip came to an end Sunday and did so with Concordia sweeping a doubleheader. The Eagles' established three-run leads through the first two innings of each contest and would go on to keep the Urban Knights off the scoreboard, winning 3-0 and 9-0.

GAME 1 – CUI 3, ART U 0
Similarly to the day prior, Academy of Art threatened offensively in the first inning, loading the bases with no outs, but Concordia responded by retiring three straight then scoring twice in the bottom half of the frame.

In the second inning, ART U again had runners at second and third, but a double play ended the scoring chance and the Eagles built their lead to 3-0 with a solo home run by Nicole Chavez. From there, though freshman pitcher Hannah Rose Balke (9-5) tossed 4.2 scoreless relief innings, CUI starter Grayson Harvey (10-4) completed a five-hit shutout to win game three of the weekend series.

GAME 2 – CUI 9, ART U 0 (5)
Four singles produced a 3-0 lead for Concordia in the first inning of the series finale and though the Knights put two aboard in the second, CUI's BethAnn McCann (9-2) continued the day-long shutout.

As had been the case for much of the series, Academy of Art put a runner into scoring position in the top of the fourth after senior Jessica West singled up the middle and was bunted to second, but ART U could not capitalize and the momentum thrust back to the Eagles in the bottom half. A six-run rally was capped by Sarah Kretschmar's two-run homer, forcing the Knights' hand in the fifth where the game ended 9-0 in favor of the home team.

ART U is now 12-14 overall this season with a 6-8 PacWest record. Freshman infielder Freddie Carrillo was the lone Academy of Art player with hits in both games, finishing the day 2-for-4.

The Eagles remain in strong contention for the top conference record at 12-4 and 24-9-2 overall. Kretschmar ended the twinbill 4-for-5 with the home run and two runs batted in. Harvey and McCann, both winning pitchers, combined for 11.0 of Concordia's 12.0 scoreless innings, surrendering seven hits in the process.

With its eight-game Southern California now complete, Academy of Art returns home to host UH Hilo this week (Mar. 25-26) and Hawaii Pacific next (Mar. 29).
