2017 U.S. Track & Field and Coaches Association High Point Athletes of the Meet
NEW ORLEANS – The accolades continued to roll in for
Mobolade Ajomale on Wednesday. With
National Track Athlete of the Year and
West Region Track Athlete of the Year plus National Championships in both the 60m and 200m at
Indoor Nationals already to his name, Ajomale added High Point Athlete of the Meet.
The award, as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), is given to one student-athlete of each gender who compiles the highest point total at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships. This year, the honor was shared by Ajomale and NCAA Champion Tiffin's Cory Blair.
This past Saturday, Ajomale defended his title in the indoor 60m this season, capturing the sixth and seventh individual championships in the history of Academy of Art's men's program following in the footsteps of
Johnny Carter (Indoor LJ, TJ) and
Jordan Edwards (Indoor & Outdoor 400m). The product of Richmond Hill, Canada began the day by winning the 60m championship for the second consecutive year with a time of 6.60. Less than two hours later, he then grabbed the 200m title, going 21.05 for the individual win and a total of 20 points on the day.
The redshirt sophomore scored all but seven of Academy of Art's 27 team points, helping them finish a program second-best fifth overall.
This is the fourth time an Urban Knight has been bestowed the honor of High Point Athlete of the Meet as Vashti Thomas did it twice in 2013 (
indoor,
outdoor) and Carter joined her in
indoor that season.
