BURNABY, British Colombia – Once Simon Fraser began connecting from long range on Wednesday evening, they did not stop. Inside The Clan's West Gym, the home team defeated Academy of Art 88-49, breaking a Great Northwest Athletic Conference single-game record for 3-pointers made (18) along the way.
Although 3-pointers by redshirt senior guard
Jazzlynn Brewster and senior forward
Helena Orts opened the game, the SFU long-range attack proved to be dangerous early. The Clan connected on seven triples in the opening quarter despite a boost from redshirt senior forward
Pre'Franz Dominick off the bench and Orts' continued production.
Up 27-22 after 10 minutes, Simon Fraser began the second quarter with a 17-2 run capped by a pair of 3-pointers. Six points from Dominick closed the half for ART U, but the home team took a 49-30 advantage into the locker room at the break.
SFU continued to roll in the second half, using a 14-3 run to gain a 63-33 lead and, three 3-pointers thereafter, The Clan needed three more to break the record at the start of the fourth. The first three shots made by Simon Fraser were from distance including Jessica Jones' milestone shot with two minutes and 54 seconds left. An 88-49 score was the final as SFU finished 18-of-35 from beyond the three-point arc.
ART U drops to 0-4 overall this season despite three Urban Knights scoring in double figures. Brewster led the way with 13 points plus six rebounds and three steals while Dominick and Orts each had 12 points apiece, combining for 13 rebounds.
SFU rises to 4-2 on the year and had four different players make three or more 3-pointers including Tia Tsang who finished with 21 points on 6-of-8 shooting from long range. Nicole Vander Helm put in a game-high 23 points while Sophie Swant added 20 points, nine rebounds, six steals, five assists, and four blocks. Simon Fraser's 18 triples broke the GNAC single-game record The Clan had set against Northwest Nazarene in 2016.
Academy of Art will open the 20th Annual Lynda Goodrich Classic this Friday, Nov. 24 in a neutral site matchup with Saint Martin's at noon inside Western Washington's Carver Gym.
