SAN FRANCISCO – It has been a well-documented rivalry: that of Academy of Art (0-2-1) and SF State (0-3-1) men's soccer. In 2015, the Urban Knights came away with a thrilling
1-0 win in overtime during the Kezar Classic. Saturday was the gators' turn for glory, defeating ART U 5-0 in the finale of the Golden Gate Classic.
Â
SFSU scored in the early goings on a well-placed cross into the box that sophomore goalkeeper
Kevin Mendez was unable to reach. After adding another goal in the 51st minute, the gators tacked on three more in a span of just over five minutes. Art U had a pair of chances in the final moments of the first half by a two freshmen:
Isiah Quiros and
Philippe Zamignani. Zamignani's header was the closer of the two, hit just outside of the goal, but SF State's keeper was able to thwart the opportunity.
Â
Academy of Art finished the tournament 0-1-1, but had several strong performances including sophomore midfielder
Jordan Seech and senior defender
Ricardo "Ricky" Mendoza. who were named to the Golden Gate Classic All-Tournament Team. Mendoza was a valuable part of ART U's mid and backfield, tirelessly attacking the ball and creating opportunities for the offense to score. Seech was responsible for both of the Urban Knights' goals in their
come-from-behind, double overtime tie against Stanislaus State on Thursday and played all 110 minutes. It was the sophomore's first career two-goal match.
