In its penultimate series of the year, Academy of Art University softball split a pair of games at Dominican on Saturday. The opener saw Penguins' starter Ashlyn Moriarity (5-9) throw an eight-hit shutout for the 3-0 win then junior pitcher
(3-9) provided the rebuttal in game two, holding Dominican to zero runs on just four hits for a 2-0 ART U victory.
GAME ONE
Although Academy of Art threatened in the first inning with junior outfielder
Jessica West reaching third, a pair of outs kept them off the scoreboard. Momentum quickly shifted with Catyln Cavender doubling in the first run of the contest in the bottom of the first, but ART U continued to create opportunities with hits in each of the next two innings.
Moriarity, however, answered by getting the outs her team needed in both jams. Katelyn Harden homered one batter into the fifth inning to make it 2-0, but sophomore pitcher
Brenna Mitchell (11-13) struck out her fourth batter of the game to keep the Knights within striking distance.
They nearly did just that in the sixth when a double by freshman infielder
Brenna Youngquist was followed by singles from senior catcher
Elise Oldham and senior outfielder
Andrea Gill, but the bases were left loaded. One more Dominican run came in the sixth and Moriarity would complete the 3-0 shutout with a clean seventh.
GAME TWO
Making adjustments from the first game, ART U broke the second contest's scoreless tie with a run on a pair of singles. West hit her way aboard, stole second, then freshman infielder
Juliana Lopez brought her home with a shot through the right side.
"We were hoping to shift the momentum in our favor in game two and being able to produce early certainly accomplished that," said head coach
Sonja Garnett.
Allen found her groove quickly in the first inning, striking out her last two batters and isolating the Penguins' base-runners in the ensuing frames. Defense would play a big role exemplified by Oldham picking up her 30th career runner caught stealing to end the third. In the sixth, ART U added an insurance run on single by sophomore infielder
Samantha Klune and, though the Penguins got the winning run to first base in the seventh, a groundout ended the threat for Academy of Art's 2-0 victory.
Allen picked up her third win of the year with no runs allowed on four hits, three walks, and six strikeouts. She recorded at least one strikeout in five of her seven innings pitched.
"Hunter threw very well today," said Garnett. "She spun the ball effectively and hit her spots. She came away with some huge strikeouts and her defense played well behind her."
ART U ends Saturday with a 17-31-1 overall record and 13-17 in PacWest play. Lopez finished with two hits in each of the games, going 4-for-7 with one run batted in and one run scored. She now has a six-game hitting streak. Oldham and Gill were each 2-for-3 in the opener while Klune was 1-for-3 with a RBI in game two. With Hawaii Pacific taking two losses to UH Hilo later in the day, the Knights have solidified their seventh place finish in the PacWest standings.
Dominican finishes its 2016 campaign owning the sixth spot in the standings with a 16-16 record (19-32 overall). Harden led the way, going 4-for-7 with one home run, a double, two RBIs , and one run scored. Moriarity threw all seven innings of the opener, offering the shutout on eight hits with no strikeouts. Gaby Katafias (7-9) posted a complete game in the day's finale, allowing two runs on five hits with three strikeouts.
Academy of Art will play its final two games of the year tomorrow (May 1) with a rain-rescheduled doubleheader featuring Holy Names beginning at noon at Mission Blue Field.
"Tomorrow we want to come out and play hard for our seniors," said Garnett. "They have had great careers and their team is excited to play beside them one last time."
