Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

ART U Outdueled By No. 10 UAA in Anchorage

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA – Academy of Art women's basketball (0-2) used an impressive run in the second quarter to bring themselves within striking distance of No. 10 Alaska Anchorage (2-0). However, the Seawolves outpaced the Urban Knights in second half, taking the contest 86-49.

Right out of the gate, UAA set the tone with a fast-paced style of play and stingy defense. After senior forward Pre'Franz Dominick tied the game at two just over a minute into the contest, the Seawolves only let through two more points over the next six minutes. During that time UAA scored 20 points of their own and exited the quarter leading 22-13.

However, at the end of the opening period, the Urban Knights began to catch fire. After trailing 20-4 with 4:42 remaining in the first, ART U went on an 11-2 run to shave their deficit to just seven points (22-15). Academy of Art continued to roll and pushed their streak to a 15-6 run. The Knights outscored Alaska 22-19 in the second quarter and at one time landed four-consecutive 3-pointers in a three-minute span including three within 90 seconds. Junior guard Rodericka Ware started the streak with the first two triples and finished the night 4-for-12 from beyond the arc. In fact, Ware's 12 three-point attempts tied the record for the eighth-most during a single game in program history.  After trailing by as much as 16 points in the first half, the Urban Knights headed to the locker room with the momentum squarely on their side, down by only seven, 41-35.

When the teams returned for the second half, the contest quickly became a battle for the control of said momentum. The Seawolves won the struggle, completing five-consecutive shots before ART U could put one in. UAA held the Urban Knights to just four points during the third quarter and continued to dominate in the fourth, only allowing ten points while scoring 17 of their own. The Seawolves went on to finish the contest by a final score of 86-49.

Ware's big night from three-point land gave her 15 points in the contest and her second-consecutive game with double digit figures. Junior guard Hayley Pryor also played well. Making her second start, the Chandler, Ariz. native did not miss a single shot, going 4-for-4 from the field and 3-for-3 from beyond the three-point line.

On Sunday, Academy of Art will return home from their stay in Alaska and will begin preparations for Wednesday's matchup against Stanislaus State at 5:30 p.m.
