Three years after the first time it was done, the Academy of Art University men's soccer team again turned suspense into glory Saturday inside historic Kezar Stadium, defeating crosstown rival San Francisco State in front of a big crowd with a goal in overtime for a sudden 1-0 victory.
 
The score had stayed tied 0-0 for 97 minutes, 57 seconds. But even while playing a man down after a red card in the second half, the Urban Knights (2-1-1) still were able to get the ball up field and make a run as time was ticking towards the two-minute mark in the first overtime.

Sophomore midfielder Matthew "Matteo" Rodriguez chased down a volley originating from the right side of the field into the goalkeeper box, trying to beat one defender for a shot at the SFSU (3-1) 'keeper. As Rodriguez tried to corral the bouncing ball, he was dragged down from behind by the Gators' Cody Rodas, drawing both a red card and ejection for Rodas and a penalty kick for the Urban Knights.
 
Senior midfielder Kristof Urbanyi, already with two penalty kick goals to his name in 2015, lined up to take the potential game-winning shot for ART U. With 2:02 left on the overtime clock, Urbanyi fired his shot past San Francisco State's Emmanuel Jimenez to hand the Urban Knights their second overtime victory of the season.
 
Saturday's match was almost a mirror image of the last time the two teams played at Kezar Stadium. On Sept. 5, 2012, it was senior forward Grimur Grimsson who was able to bury a cross pass with just 38 seconds left to give the Urban Knights a thrilling victory in front of 700 fans, the largest crowd in program history.
 
The crowd of over 500 brought a palpable energy to the fourth and final match of the 2015 Kezar Classic. The game was a tight and physical one, with the shots nearly even at 18-14 in favor of SFSU while 42 fouls and seven cards were also accumulated. San Francisco State had nearly 30 minutes with a man advantage but only outshot the Urban Knights 7-6 during that period.
 
The Gators nearly won the game in regulation. Sam Merritt had a leaping header shot from 15 yards away in the 82nd minute that hit the crossbar, keeping the score tied at 0-0. Ilja Golubevs almost had a ball roll into the left side of the net three minutes into overtime after it hit off of his body while he charged the net, but it slowly rolled past the goal on the left side, again keeping the game scoreless.
 
The victory made ART U 2-0 all-time versus the Gators – both matchups having been played at Kezar Stadium. It was San Francisco State's first defeat of the year and broke its shutout streak as well after three straight shutout wins.
 
Freshman goalkeeper Kevin Mendez was named the Kezar Classic Most Valuable Player after his second straight overtime shutout. He recorded five more saves Saturday to bring his tournament total to 10. It was the first time an ART U goalkeeper had posted back-to-back shutouts since Joshua Leader did so on Oct. 26 and 28, 2013. Senior defenders Lennart Fleschhut and Runar Gudbjartsson were also named to the all-tournament team after lending hands in the double shutouts.
 
The Urban Knights next take a break for two weeks before beginning Pacific West Conference play on the road in Hawaii on Sept. 26.
 
CHICO STATE 2, DOMINICAN (CALIF.) 1 (OT)
Carter Johnson tapped home the golden goal 5 minutes, 58 seconds, into overtime to give the Wildcats a 2-1 win against Dominican University of California in the third game of the Kezar Classic at Kezar Stadium Saturday.
 
Johnson combined with Rajaee DeLane on both of Chico State's goals Saturday. They teamed up to set up Omar Nuno's fifth-minute goal. Johnson started a counter attack from the middle of the park, beat one defender, and then slipped a pass to DeLane, who made the extra pass to Nuno for the score. An own-goal – an attempted clearance that ricocheted back into the Wildcats' net – knotted the scored at 1-1 in the 14th minute.
 
Four Wildcats were named to the Kezar Classic All-Tournament team: Johnson, Matt Hurlow, DeLane and Nuno. Dominican's Roberto Macias was also named to the team.
