Point Loma Pushes Past Knights In 2nd Half

PACIFICA, Calif. – Locked in a scoreless battle with Academy of Art University well into the second half, Point Loma broke through with three goals in a 15-minute stretch to prevail 3-0 on Thursday at Fairmont Field.

After an early shot attempt by Justin Erhunmwunsee was saved, ART U exchanged looks on frame through the first 21 minutes.  Freshman goalkeeper Kevin Mendez held the line during a flurry of shots in the box in the 33rd minute and added his fourth stop with only five seconds left in the half.

12662As the contest became more physical early in the second half, it was the Sea Lions who broke the scoreless tie with a goal by Nico Tagaloa in the 62nd minute. The visitors' lead became 2-0 in the 65th minute when Daniel ten Bosch received a quick pass from Patrice Glaser and scored over the defense. The 75th minute saw an ART U foul in the box which led to a penalty kick goal by Andrew Ritchie. When the dust had settled, PLNU came away with the 3-0 victory.

Academy of Art is now 5-6-2 overall and 3-4-1 in conference action. Four different Knights registered shots on frame while Mendez notched four saves while logging his 13th complete game between the pipes.

Improving to 7-4-1 overall and 6-2 in PacWest play, Point Loma was led by Tagaloa and ten Bosch's respective fourth goals of the year as well as Ritchie's third. Goalkeeper Michael Lambert picks up his third shutout of the year with four saves.

ART U's six-match homestand comes to a close this Saturday with Azusa Pacific coming to CCSF for a 2:30 p.m. matchup.
