Box Score San Diego, CA – Battling a tough Point Loma team that came in 8-1 in PacWest Conference play, ART U Volleyball ended up on the wrong end of a 3-1 final (25-19, 25-22, 19-25, 25-14). Academy of Art came back from a 2-0 deficit with eight kills by sophomore
Emily Papale in a turn-around third set, but the Sea Lions ended up holding on in the fourth.
A 7-2 run early in the first set put Point Loma ahead 12-6, but ART U soon responded with its own surge. A kill by Brum was backed up by a service aces from senior
Brittany Ulmer and led to a 5-1 push which brought the Knights to within two points, 16-14. From there, the Sea Lions closed the 25-19 set win on a 9-5 run despite a pair of kills from Papale.
The second set favored ART U early as a 4-0 run that included sophomore
Melissa Brum's kill put Academy of Art ahead 7-4. PLNU rallied back to tie and from there it was an evenly played matchup all the way to 20-20. The Sea Lions made a final move with three unanswered points and ultimately won 25-22.Â
Academy of Art turned things around in the third set with a 7-0 start that featured four kills from Papale who went on to hit .500 in the frame. Though the Sea Lions showed some life, ART U went further ahead on a 5-2 run finished off by
Isabel Emrich's kill. Point Loma came to within four, but the Knights scored three consecutive points to go up 23-16 and took a 25-19 set victory in the end.
In the fourth, Point Loma got ahead 11-6 by way of a 7-1 burst and soon the lead expanded to 18-9 as the Sea Lions' offense became reignited. Â Brum and junior
Rachael Smith each had kills down the stretch, but PLNU wound up on top 25-14 for the win.
For the now 8-9 Urban Knights who are 3-6 in PacWest play, Brum finished with a team-high 14 kills to go with 11 digs for her 15th double-double of the year. Papale added 13 kills and nine digs while Smith notched 35 assists and 14 digs.
ART U returns home to Kezar Pavilion this coming week to take on Fresno Pacific this Wednesday, Oct. 15.
