San Rafael, CA -- The Academy of Art University women's volleyball team went into Conlan Recreational Center on Saturday night with their eyes on their first conference victory of 2012, but that was not to be the case as they ran into stiff competition with a revitalized Dominican team that took three straight sets from the Urban Knights, 14-25, 19-25, and 17-25.
The Urban Knights (3-7, 0-2 PWC) continued to be their own worst enemy, making 21 errors as a team, 10 in the first set alone. In the first set, that was juxtaposed with an error-free set by the Lady Penguins, who had two players in double figures in kills and no players in the negative for hitting percentage at the end of the day.
ART U's second set was one that was more of what fans were used to seeing, as they cut the errors in half and were trailing 16-15 at one point, but they still came up short as Dominican pulled away on a 5-0 run to make it hard for the Knights to come back. The third set was characterized by a couple big runs by the Lady Penguins at important times in the match, as they took a 5-0 run to make it 12-6 early on and then a 4-0 run at the end of the match to close it out 25-17.
Caitlin Boring and
Holli "Ka'ena" Kaina both had seven kills to lead the Knights, while
Janelle Burnett and
Midori Le each had 12 digs.
Rachael Smith handled the setting duties and had 21 assists. Hannah Stocking (16) and Jessica Jones (10) led the way for Dominican on the attack.
The Knights will continue their PacWest slate with a Southern California roadtrip, starting next Wednesday against Point Loma Nazarene University. Then they'll head to Azusa Pacific for a match on Friday and will finish up the trip with an evening match against California Baptist on Saturday.
