San Francisco, CA --
September was a busy month for the artist-athletes at ART U, filled with the start of classes, competitions and serving the community of San Francisco. The Urban Knights participated in a program that promotes female athletes and healthy living while also showing support to help find a cure for diabetes.

.
The San Francisco Parks & Recreation Department hosted their annual Tasters Choice- Girls in Sports Jamboree for athletes ages 5-12 years old at Kezar Pavilion.  Female artist-athletes from the basketball , golf,  soccer and track & field/cross country teams,  spent the day serving as role models  and coaches to the young athletes while encouraging an active and healthy lifestyle. Over 100 local girls participated in mini clinics to learn the fundamentals of sports such as basketball, volleyball, tennis, golf, track and lacrosse.

"The artist-athletes were incredible role models and leaders to the future generation of female athletes at this clinic," says Assistant Athletic Director, Meghan Bushnell. "It is exciting for the Urban Knights to make an impact on a young girl's life while giving them inspiration to become a healthy female athlete. We thank the San Francisco Parks & Recreation Department for inviting us to this positive event and look forward to participating next year".

Continuing with tradition, the Urban Knights returned for the second year to volunteer at the 2012 Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes. Members of the men's basketball, baseball and men's soccer teams helped mark the course along the Embarcadero, assisted with set up and breakdown and helped cheer on the participants as they walked the 2 mile course.

"The Academy of Art student-athletes were incredible volunteers without whom we could not have had a successful and safe event.  I was really impressed with your student-athletes' professionalism; I've been to hundreds of special events over the years and the Academy's volunteers were among the best I've seen," says Michael H. Chae, Executive Director for the San Francisco Bay Area American Diabetes Association.

The Urban Knights continue to strive to be servant leaders to the San Francisco community, with a vision of exceeding last year's standard of winning the PacWest Community Engagement Award.
