ART U Volleyball Defeats the Warriors in Three

Box Score

San Francisco, CA ---
The Urban Knights made easy work of the visting Warrriors of William Jessup University. ART U defeated WJU in three quick sets, 25-14, 25-19, 25-17.  As a team the Urban Knights nearly doubled the amount of kills of William Jessup, combining for 42 to that of WJU who registered just 27.

The Urban Knights came into the match riding the wave of their last victory and didn't drop the inensity, despite being considered the more experienced team on the floor, "It''s all about discipline for us, and we took the first step tonight toward maturing into a championship team," said Head Coach Allison Magner.

With their leading hitter out of the match, it was clear that if the Urban Knights were going to win, everyone would need to step up. "It should be expected to win the games you are supposed to, and that certain team members step up when needed. That's what champions do," continued Magner.

The Urban Knights established their dominance from the first set, opening up a 12-8 lead over the Warriors. ART U continued to dominate as they scored the next nine points to extend the lead to 21-8. A few errors by ART U brought the Warrior to within seven, but after a timeout call, the Urban Knights were back on track, cruising to a 25-14 victory.

In the final two sets, William Jessup was able to keep the sets close through the middle, but the attacking power of ART U eventually wore them down and the Knights won sets two and three, 25-17 and 25-19 respectfully. "This type of discipline is new for our team, but we continue to work when everyone else is taking days off , and it is paying off," Magner continued. "We continue to work on the two 'F' words, Fun and Focus."

It was obvious to the fans in the stands that the ART U women's volleyball team was definitely having fun, and were indeed focused. Part of the fun was watching freshman Kanoe Irvine achieve an Academy of Art women's volleyball record. The Freshman recorded seven aces on the night. The record had been held previously by senior Dan Yang, who aced six on Sept 13, 2008 against Holy Names University.

Angela Heath lead the Urban Knights offensively knocking down 13 kills and two block assists. Camille Board pitched in with nine kills and four block assists. Melissa Cheng added five kills in the victory, and dished out a match high 34 assists. Defensively, Amy Bush batted away two solo blocks while also adding a block assist, and Nicolette Hagan had a team high 13 digs.

The Urban Knights return to the floor Friday evening when they take on the Penguins of Dominican University in San Rafael, CA. Opening serve is set for 7:00 PM.
