AAU Unable to Weather the Red Storm

Box Score

San Francisco, CA--
The Dixie State Red Storm, who are currently ranked 2nd in the PacWest, dominated in all phases of the match, sweeping the Academy of Art University, 3-0 (25-14, 28-26, 25-22) Friday night at Kezar Pavilion. The match sparks a five game home stint in which the Urban Knights will compete against three conference opponents. A feat that has already proven to be a daunting task for the Knights who are now 1-3 in league play.

The Academy of Art University would score first in set one but it would be their only lead of the set as the Red Storm jumped out to an early 7-2 lead. A kill by Camille Board would bring the Knights to within three, 5-8, but DSC went on another 7-2 run and jumped out to a 15-7 lead mid way through the set. The Urban Knights scored just seven more points as Dixie State took the match 25-14. The Red Storm earned 12 kills and eight service aces while holding the Urban Knights to nine kills and zero aces in the first set. AAU could never seem to establish their dominance on DSC.

The second set saw AAU playing catch-up for a majority of the match. The Urban Knights, however, did keep the score to within one or two points before a Jelena Jakovljevic kill would give them their first lead since early in the first set. The kill put AAU up one, 21-20. Following that kill the game would see six ties with Dixie State barely edging out the Knights for the victory, 28-26.

In the third and final set an Amy Bush kill sparked five straight set points to put the Urban Knights up 7-5 early in the game. However, a 6-3 run would put the Red Storm up 14-10. The Urban Knights came as close as two, 21-23, but ultimately it was errors late in the game and the strong attack from their opposition that would give Dixie State set three and the match.

For the Red Storm Katie Luna lead all players with a match high 15 kills and three aces. Alex Shearer and Brita Noble both finished with eight kills a piece, while Noble served up a match high five aces. Chelsi DeWitt notched a double double dishing out 34 assists to go with her 14 digs. With the win DSC is 3-0 in conference play and 9-3 overall.

For the Urban Knights Dan Yang had a team high 12 kills, while Jelena Jakovljevic finished with another double double, 10 kills and 12 digs. Melissa Cheng finished with 26 assists and Camille Board knocked down four block assists and one block solo. The loss gives AAU their fourth of the season. and their second in Pac West play, they are now 12-4 overall and 1-2 in conference.

AAU will return to Kezar Tuesday Sept 29 for a game against Chaminade University. Game time is set for 7:00 PM.
