Urban Knights Volleyball Scores First Win in School History

Box Score

Carson, CA---
Playing an energetic four sets, the Academy of Art University volleyball team won its first game of the season with a 3-1 victory against the Toros of Cal State Dominguez Hill.  Narrowly pulling out a win in the fourth set AAU held on to pull ahead and claim the 26-24 set, taking the match in four.

The Toros gained the lead late in set one with the offensive help of Marissa Anderson who recorded three-consecutive late game service aces to propel the Toros to a 25-21 win.

AAU responded early in set two, taking a lead off the service of KaUwila Lavea, gaining them a 12-6 lead. The Toros would eventually record 15 points, but not enough to answer the Knight's 25.

Set three continued evenly. The Toros started to show signs of winning, but after a time out time-out in an attempt to gain the lead from being down 17-20, two errors ended up costing them the set.

The Urban Knights started the fourth set by taking an early lead. In the fourth set, the Urban Knights lead the CSUDH Toros for most of the game; until five unanswered points in a row courtesy of Heather Rushton, and unforced errors on the Knight's part shot the Toros into striking distance, eventually allowing them to tie 24-24.  But AAU broke down the Toros offense, forcing them to commit three attack errors for a final score of 26-24 and winning the match, 3-1.

The Urban Knights were led by KaUwila Lavea (Waikoloa, Hawaii) who recorded a match high 15 kills followed by Jelena Jakovljevic (Valjevo, Serbia) who finished with 10 Kills and Outside Hitter Ali Tyson-Taufoou (Cape Girardeau, MO) chipped in 12 digs in the win.

The Urban Knights finish up play in the Cal State LA/Cal State Dominguez Hills Tournament tomorrow afternoon, playing Grand Canyon University at Noon, and Central Washington University at 3pm
