Jimmy Meuel joined ART U in the fall of 2017 after spending a year at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon.
With the Urban Knights in 2018, Meuel worked with head coach Dan McDermott to guide the team to a 24-25 overall record and sixth-place finish in the PacWest Conference standings. ART U swept Dixie State and Holy Names while also winning season series against Simpson, UH Hilo, and Hawaii Pacific. Additionally, three Knights were named to the All-PacWest Team including second baseman Elijah Smith, LHP Alex Fernandez, and RHP Chris Rost.
With Lewis & Clark, he worked with the pitchers and catchers while also coaching third base and serving as the recruiting coordinator. On the mound, the 2017 Pioneers saw several major statistical improvements as well as the first all-conference pitcher in nearly 10 years.
Before moving to Oregon, Meuel served as the pitching coach at San Jose State during the 2016 season and helped the Spartans lower their walk total by 49 and the team earned run average (ERA) by 0.7. Two pitchers from the 2016 Spartans have since been selected in the MLB draft.
Before joining San Jose State, Meuel worked on the coaching staffs at UC Davis and University of San Francisco. From 2012-16, 16 players from the Aggies and Dons have gone on to play professionally.
Meuel's first coaching job came in 2008 as the pitching and recruiting coordinator at Menlo College. In his three years with the Oaks, Menlo broke the school's records for wins and shutouts, fewest walks, and lowest ERA. The Oaks produced five pitchers who signed professional contracts as well. In 2010, Menlo threw the first no-hitter in school history and in 2011, had its first draft pick.
Before his coaching days, Meuel was a student-athlete at Willamette University. There, he played three years of baseball for the Bearcats, leading the team in appearances in 2007 and 2008. In 2007, he set the Willamette Division III record for appearances in a season. Meuel was also a member of the Willamette Trustee Working Group on Athletes as a junior and senior.
While still competing at Willamette, Meuel coached in various capacities with Headfirst Baseball Academy from 2006-10, winning two Bay League titles and helping 19 players move on to college baseball.
Jimmy joins a coaching staff with McDermott at the helm, entering his fourth season, while assistant coach Matt Kavanaugh enters his second.
Meuel and his wife, Annette, live in Oakland with their son, Henry.
