KNIGHT WATCH
Entering the conference tournament as the #3 seed, the Knights have shown what they're capable of in numerous offensive and defensive categories all season long. Playing with just a nine-man rotation, ART U will look to make their way through the tournament after being a top-six team in offense (74.0 ppg), while being the third-best team in overall defense giving up just 68.6 ppg.
Spreading the ball out and playing team basketball throughout 2024-25, senior forward Isaiah Williams led the team in scoring with 13.8 ppg, while all of senior guard Rodney Munson (12.2), senior forward Quintin Metcalf (10.5), redshirt junior Donovan Vickers (10.1), and junior forward Robbie Armbrester (9.4) added on solid contributions towards the team's points. Defensively, the hard-working trio out on the perimeter in senior guard Treylon Payne, junior forward Bryce Moore, and Armbrester have locked down their opponents over the course of the season, while Metcalf proved he can cover the paint, ranking top-four in both rebounds and blocks in the conference, with Williams leading the squad in steals with 2.0 per game (fifth-best in PacWest).
Earlier this season against Westmont on Feb. 15, the Knights held four members of the squad scoring double-digit points, while Armbrester dominated on the boards with 13 rebounds. ART U will need to work cohesively once again to get through to the Semifinals against Biola, and stick to what's worked as they out-rebounded Westmont 48-33 while passing around the rock with eight different members scoring a bucket.
WHAT'S UP WARRIORS
Dropping down to the #6 seed on the last day of the regular season after initially starting the morning in the #4 slot, the Westmont Warriors fell into competing against the Knights in the first round of the PacWest Tournament. Surrendering their last two showings of the regular season against Biola and Point Loma, Westmont previously won six straight, including one against their future tournament rival in ART U. Taking that 65-62 contest after a game that was down to the wire, the Warriors snuck out with the win over the Knights as both teams got an early look at one another. With all eyes on Adrian McIntyre, the Warriors will need the conference and nation's leading scorer back after missing the team's two most recent losses. The trio behind McIntyre of Drew Ramirez, Jarrett Bryant, and De'Undrae Perteete who all average double-digit scoring will look to assist in scoring as well. With three games between the teams, Westmont leads the series 2-1 after taking this season's matchup, as well as last year's close 82-80 final that saw double overtime on Feb. 8, 2024.
POTENTIAL OPPONENTS
Should the Urban Knights capture a win in their first matchup of the PacWest Tournament in the Quarterfinals, ART U will face Biola after the Eagles received a first-round bye as the #2 seed. The contest would be a PacWest rematch after the Knights defeated Biola earlier this season on Jan. 2 with an 82-67 final score on the road in Southern California. If ART U manages to get through both rounds thus far, they'd see either #1 seed (No. 12 nationally) Point Loma, #4 Hawaii Hilo, or #5 Concordia in the PacWest Tournament Championship.
ART U CLOSE OUT REGULAR SEASON WITH DOMINANT WIN OVER APU
Closing out the regular season with a victory, Academy of Art men's basketball clinched the third seed in the Pacific West Conference Tournament on Mar. 1 with their 84-60 win over Azusa Pacific.
LOOKING AHEAD
Should Academy of Art advance through the PacWest Championship, next would be a spot in NCAA West Regional Quarterfinal that is set to begin on Saturday, Mar. 14. The Selection Show will take place this Sunday, Mar. 9 at 11:00 p.m. ET (8 p.m. PT).
