ART U Trio Scores In PacWest Victory Hosting Chaminade

SAN FRANCISCO -- Academy of Art men's soccer managed to knock it into the back of the net three times from a trio of goal scorers, setting the tone for what would become a 3-1 Pacific West Conference win over Chaminade on Thursday.

The Urban Knights, who are now 1-6-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference standings, came out eager to give themselves their first PacWest victory of the season. The Urban Knights converted on their first shot of the match when ART U's redshirt sophomore midfielder Elvis Mensah scored for the first time of the season in the 18th minute of play. Now tied for third on ART U in points (4), Mensah found himself on the near post heading it in past a diving goalkeeper dished in off a free kick from junior forward Alejandro Palos, his second of the year bringing himself to tied first on the squad in points (6).

Senior midfielder Gilly Miller made an offensive push down the sideline and towards the box dribbling through defenders as he passed the ball across the keeper towards the far post and onto the head of redshirt senior forward Jossart Jodito for the score in the 31st minute to put their team up 2-0. The Silverswords shot two more times in the first period of play after the Knights' second goal, but couldn't find an answer as the match went into halftime.

Elvis MensahWithin an eventful first 20 minutes into the second half, no scores were added despite plenty of shots and the Silverswords going down a man just as the half began. Chaminade eventually brought themselves within striking distance in the 55th minute when Oliver Horgan found a score with a ball passed over by Owen Caba.

In the 63rd minute, Miller once again made his way into the box and was pulled down by the Silverswords' defense, earning himself a penalty kick. Miller would gain more points towards his campaign as he slotted the shot into the bottom left corner, too far for the keeper to handle as he dove the correct direction and stopped the momentum of Chaminade, getting their two-goal lead right back. Miller puts himself into sole-second place for total points in ART U history with his 41 total and remains in first in points per game.

The Silverswords, now 0-6-1 and 0-2 in the PacWest Conference, would shoot four more times in the match, scoring none with goalkeeper Ronaldo Gutierrez recording two saves in the process and three saves total in his first start of his collegiate career and freshman campaign. Academy of Art now ranks second in the PacWest Conference rankings in saves as a team (43).

Freshman midfielder Joey Glaab has recorded his 10th straight match playing all 90 minutes and remains as the only member of the Urban Knights to be a part of every minute thus far on the season.

One match remains for the Knights on their current homestand, as Academy of Art will host the Sharks of Hawai'i Pacific on Sept. 30 with a kickoff at noon.
