2023 WSU Open & Combined Events Results (Day 1)
SPOKANE, Wash. – Academy of Art track & field's fourth day inside The Podium this season featured a new program record from
Lisa Redlinger as well as moves up in the national rankings for the women's distance medley relay,
Selena Arjona-Alcazar, and
Britney Clark all to start Washington State's Open & Combined Events on Friday.
Contesting the 5000m for the first time in her collegiate career, Redlinger bettered the ART U record by more than 20 seconds with a time of 17:10.08. She was third on the day behind a pair from NCAA Division I UC Riverside and debuted inside the nation's top 20 as an Indoor Nationals provisional qualifier. Meanwhile,
Audrey Rosencrans, who previously held the event record, offered a season-best 18:15.14 for a near full minute drop from her first mark of the year in January.
Academy of Art excelled in the distance medley relay as well with
Grace Southern,
Anna Belles Gallen,
Lina Hanich, and
Katharina Goetschl combining for their first Indoor Nationals qualification as a foursome. Second only to a quartet from NCAA DI Arizona, the Urban Knights delivered a 11:56.36 mark which made them one of just five teams to run sub-12:00 this year.
Surrounded by NCAA DI talent, Arjona-Alcazar improved her time in the 200m dash on Friday, rising to multiple spots nationally after crossing the finish line at 24.28. The season best and Indoor Nationals provisional mark had her seventh of 89 competitors, just nine spots ahead of Clark who added her name to the Indoor Nationals hopefuls with a time of 24.83.
The men's 200m saw
Robin Black make it five consecutive meets inside the provisional standard for Indoor Nationals. Though it was not his fastest of the season, he still ended up fourth of 71 total sprinters at 21.58 while
Jamaal Palmer turned in his fastest time since joining the program (22.69).
Marie-Jeanne Ourega battled multiple jumpers from NCAA DI schools such as San Diego State and Utah Valley in a long jump competition where she finished fourth of 56 others. She surpassed the Indoor Nationals provisional barrier for the fourth meet this season with a distance of 18-10.75 (5.76m) in her opening attempt.
In the women's 800m,
Michaela Andrews crept ever closer to the fourth spot in program history, finishing fifth of 36 runners with a season-best 2:14.85 that was just 0.17 seconds from the Indoor Nationals provisional standard. The heavily NCAA DI field in her event could also be found on the men's side where the trio of
Jaden Singleton (1:56.69),
Conrad Heinemann (1:57.13), and
Hudson Lockette (1:57.17) all posted season bests while ending in the middle of 42-runner field.
The Urban Knights return to The Podium tomorrow to close out the WSU Open & Combined Events meet.
