OAKLAND, Calif. – While Academy of Art baseball would receive four innings of no-hit ball from senior right-hander
Collin Carriger with eight strikeouts through that span, Holy Names would steal the lead with a five-run seventh inning and never look back, taking game two of this non-conference series by a 6-3 final.
Through four innings the Urban Knights (2-7) were able to keep the Hawks (7-4) bats shut down with Carriger dominating on the hill with electric stuff leading him to strike out two of three batters faced in the first. Much like game one of the series, ART U would put two runners on in the bottom half of the frame, including one in scoring position, but both would be left stranded on base.
After a leadoff walk to start the second, Carriger would settle down and punch out another two batters, though the second one came in a clutch situation with a runner in scoring position and two outs. That allowed Academy of Art to plate the game's first run in their half of the inning, as senior first baseman
Vincent Lontz led things off with a double that one-hopped the wall in right field and eventually scored on an RBI groundout from freshman infielder
Emil Jellinek.

ontinuing his streak, Carriger would sit down two batters in each of the third and fourth innings to keep ART U in front by the slim margin, but the no-hit bid would come to an end in the top of the fifth after the inning began with a runner reaching via an error, followed immediately by a fake-bunt-turned-double down the left field line. Though he would strike out his ninth batter of the game, the tying run would come around to score after Esai Santos worked a full count and eventually a walk with the bases loaded.
The tie was short-lived as the Knights jumped back out in their half of the inning when junior outfielder
Charles Morgan worked a walk of his own and moved all the way around to third after a balk and a wild pitch, finally coming across the plate on a sacrifice fly from redshirt senior shortstop
Dominic Ruggiero.
Carriger collected his 10th and final strikeout of his start in the sixth inning, but would run into a jam in the seventh and would be responsible for the runners on base that would eventually come around to score, giving the Hawks their first lead of the game. Freshman righty
Dallen Turner would do his best to mitigate the damage, but HNU was seemingly finding all the gaps leading to their five runs, as they would not relinquish the lead.
ART U would score one final time on an inside-the-park home run from Morgan on a ball that he crushed to deep center field, going over the head of the center fielder as he crashed off the wall, allowing Morgan to dash all the way around the bases.
Despite being tagged with the loss, Carriger still tallied the most strikeouts in a game by an ART U pitcher this season with 10, allowing three earned runs on on just one hit in 6.1 innings for a quality start. Earning the win in relief for Holy Names was Max Alers, pitching a crucial scoreless 1.1 innings in the fifth and sixth for his second win of the season.
Perfect at the dish was Lontz, as he led the five Urban Knights who collected hits by going 3-for-3 with a run scored and a double, while Morgan was tops among the others by going 1-for-4 with two runs scored, an RBI, and a home run. Ruggiero would snatch the other ART U RBI and ended the game 1-for-4.
Games three and four of the series will take place tomorrow in a nine-inning, seven-inning doubleheader format, with first pitch times set for 1 and 4 p.m. from Laney College.
