FRESNO, Calif. – A busy night in goal for Academy of Art women's soccer freshman goalkeeper
Alicia Calderon helped lead her to become a new record-holder, as her season-best of 16 saves pushed her to 120 on the season to set the new ART U single-season mark. However, the offense from Fresno Pacific was too much to contain as FPU scored three times in the first half with two more in the second for a 5-0 Pacific West Conference win on Thursday.
This performance marked the fourth time this season that Calderon has reached double-digit saves for the Urban Knights (1-15-0, 0-8-0 PacWest), besting her previous season high by just one (
15 vs. APU, 10/8/22). After an impressive first 45 minutes with five saves, Calderon continued to work in the second frame with another 11 stops. In addition to having made the most saves in a season, her 16 saves in tonight's match were the second-most in a single game in program history.
Despite the record-setting night for Calderon, it was the Sunbirds (8-5-2, 5-3-0 PacWest) who controlled the offense with at least 20 shots in each half. After breaking the scoreless draw in the 26th minute, Fresno Pacific struck twice in under five minutes heading into the break with tallies in the 41st and 44th minutes. The second half continued the same as the first, with insurance goals coming in the 57th and 60th minutes.
Academy of Art generated three shots of their own in the second half, one each from the trio of senior defender
Avica Robings, junior defender
Raquel Calvo Mendez and freshman forward
Danielle Medellin, but none were on target.
Academy of Art has just two matches remaining, both coming in the span of three days next week as they battle against Point Loma on Nov. 3 before closing the year with Concordia for Senior Day on Nov. 5.
