SAN FRANCISCO – An early goal by Fresno Pacific on Saturday would force Academy of Art women's soccer to play from behind, but despite their best efforts, Academy of Art women's soccer was not able to pull off the come-from-behind effort and dropped a Pacific West Conference match by a 2-0 final.
Setting the tone early in the match for the Sunbirds (1-9-0, 1-4-0 PacWest) was Tori De Leon, as her fourth minute goal that she buried off of a cross from Ariana Quintero would come on the first shot of the game by either team, allowing FPU to settle in and ultimately control the majority of the first half. The momentum would carry over into the second frame as well, with Fresno Pacific striking for an insurance goal in the 54th minute thanks to Makayla Montoya intercepting a clearance pass before sliding into the box and burying a shot on the far left side.
Doing their best to keep up with the offense from FPU was the Urban Knights (2-5-2, 1-4 PacWest), as they took a total of six shots over the course of the match. While only two would make their way onto target, two of the best chances for ART U would come from the boots of senior midfielder
Sydney Cooke and junior forward
Brooklyn Morera. Looking for the equalizer, each had a one-on-one opportunity at the goal after nice passing plays from the Urban Knights. Unfortunately, both looks would end up sliding just wide to the left, leaving the door open for Fresno Pacific to double their lead in the second frame.
By the end of the match, Cooke finished with a team-high three shots and was responsible for both ART U shots on goal, while Morera closed out the action with two shots of her own. Being called upon early and often for the Urban Knights was senior goalkeeper
Jordyn Wight, stopping three chances in the first half and two in the second to end with a total of five on 24 shots faced.
The Urban Knights will have a quick detour from PacWest play, as the next time out will be a non-conference battle against Division III opponent UC Santa Cruz on Oct. 19 beginning at 4 p.m.
