ART U Unable To Hold Early Lead Against CWU

OAKLAND, Calif. –The Academy of Art men's basketball team scored first for the third time in as many games, but found themselves on the losing end of an early season matchup with Central Washington, 7-4.

Three batters were all it took for the Urban Knights (1-2) to get on the scoreboard, as senior third baseman Thomas Delgadillo doubled into right center field to score junior outfielder Dominic Chavarria, who walked to open the game. After a stolen base from Delgadillo, junior outfielder Noah Daubin produced an RBI groundout to make the score 2-0.

It wasn't until the fifth inning when the Wildcats (2-4) put up a run of their own, as Austin Ohland drove a pitch from ART U junior starting pitcher Ryan Skillman over the left center field wall. Central Washington would take the lead in the top of the fifth, as a walk and subsequent stolen base from Adam Fahsel preceded a Justin Hampson RBI single into right field. After another walk, Jordan Hassell drove in the go-head run with a single into left field.

Two quick outs started the top half of the sixth before a walk and a single put runners on first and second, when after a pitching change Trevor Tripoli singled through the right side to score both runners and take a 5-2 lead. Mitch Lesmeister would soon make the score 6-2 when he doubled into left center field to score Tripoli.

ART U struck back for two runs in its half of the seventh, as senior infielder Justin Summers doubled into right center to drive home a pair. The two-run game would not last long, as CWU plated yet another two-out run to lead 7-4.

Taking the win for Biola was Tyler Hoefer, as he allowed just two earned runs on two hits with two walks and six strikeouts over five innings. Josh Touhey recorded his first save of the season, pitching a perfect two innings with one strikeout to end the ballgame. Skillman was the losing pitcher of record, allowing five earned runs on five hits and four walks.

Delgadillo ended the game 1-for-3 with a run, RBI and walk, and senior second baseman Fabian Barcena closed out the game 1-for-2 with a run and a walk.

Art U will go for the series split when it takes the field for the series finale on Sunday at 11 a.m.
