OAKLAND, Calif. – On the road for the first time since mid-December, Academy of Art women's basketball came up short in a 66-60 loss to Holy Names inside Tobin Gymnasium on Tuesday evening. Though a season-high 53 rebounds helped the Urban Knights dominate second-chance points 17-8, the Hawks got a big offensive boost off their bench and hung onto the lead throughout the second half.
Though junior forward
Megan Jefferson converted an offensive put-back on the opening possession, baskets proved hard to come by thereafter as it was not until the 5:03 mark that ART U would score from the field again. Junior guard/forward
Lily Perkins provided some relief at the free throw line and put her team up 9-7 with a layup late before the final 40 seconds saw senior guard
Brianna Cates nail a 3-pointer then score a layup at the buzzer to get the Knights ahead 14-10 heading to the second quarter.
After a Perkins bucket off another offensive rebound made it 16-10 in favor of the visitors, the Hawks went on a 9-0 run then finished the half with four free throws to take a 25-21 lead into at halftime.
The margin oscillated between four and nine points throughout the third quarter as Academy of Art used three separate 4-0 runs, but repeatedly met timely HNU baskets. After junior guard
Pam Wilmore put in a pair of free throws to cut the difference to one at 40-39, an 8-0 push by Holy Names got them to a 48-41 score moving to the fourth.

A 3-pointer from senior guard
Josselyn Morris and a jumper by Perkins had the Knights within three still with seven minutes to go in the final quarter, but the Hawks continued to have answers. With just under two minutes left, a free throw by freshman forward
Aari'yanna Sanders made it 63-59 HNU, but neither side was able to capitalize on chances before three Holy Names free throws in came in the last 20 seconds en route to the 66-60 result.
Moving to 5-6 on the season and 3-4 in PacWest matchups, Academy of Art got a season-high 17 points (6-for-9 from the floor) from Perkins plus five rebounds, and four steals. Three players scored nine points apiece including Wilmore, Sanders, and Cates.
For Holy Names, now 1-10 overall and 1-6 in conference play, four players scored in double figures led by Amaya Ervin's 16 points.
The Urban Knights next depart for the first of two regular season trips to Southern California where they will face Biola this Saturday, Jan. 11 at 1 p.m. in La Mirada.
