Verhees' No-Hit Bid Reaches Sixth on Split Day

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Academy of Art split the day with Concordia after an exceptional outing from senior pitcher Mason Verhees and a walk-off hit by pitch Friday at Laney College.

Game One: CUI 10, ART U 3

A quick start from the Eagles saw the Urban Knights facing a five run deficit in the fourth. Junior outfielder Thomas Delgadillo ledoff the bottom half of the inning with a double he took opposite field directly down the left field line. Senior utility Angel Mora knocked him in on a hard hit ball through the left side of the infield. CUI kept up the offense, scoring runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to take a 10-1 lead.

In what turned out to be foreshadowing the Urban Knights loaded the bases in the eighth and scored when senior utility Donnie Gardiner was hit by a pitch. In their final at bats ART U threatened once again, scoring a run and putting runners on, but the Eagles held on to win game one of the doubleheader 10-3.

Game Two: ART U 2, CUI 1

19540Verhees took to the mound in game two and looked sharp as ever. The senior righty made it through five innings without surrendering a single hit. The offense provided some run support when junior outfielder Daniel Curiel doubled to left and senior second baseman Elijah Smith drove him in on a base hit right back up the middle.

Pitching with a 1-0 lead, Verhees' no-hitter was broken up early in the sixth on a leadoff single down the right field line. A double immediately after knocked the Eagles runner in and Verhees out. Senior pitcher Gonzo Rios came in for one out before junior pitcher Galen Manhard took over for the sixth and beyond. Manhard entered in a tough situation with the go-ahead run on 90 feet away, but the ART U all-time saves leader struck out one and forced a flyout to escape the inning unscathed. With the score tied 1-1, an eight pitch, three up three down seventh by Manhard set the Urban Knights up for a walk off win. Junior outfielder Alex Golembiewski had the same idea and started the inning with a base hit. A mis-played fielder's choice and a Curiel walk loaded the bases. Mora was called upon in the critical moment and delivered, by wearing a ball in the shoulder to bring in the winning run.

After the split day, Academy of Art moves to 13-16 overall and 5-13 in conference. The Urban Knights will close out their series with the Eagles tomorrow at noon.
