Late Eagles Rally Steals Game One

LA MIRADA, Calif. -- Academy of Art had a strong performance at the plate Thursday afternoon, out-hitting the Eagles 11 to nine and the Urban Knights led the entire game, but a late really by the Eagles stole game one 6-5 at Eagles Diamond.

ART U started hot with back to back singles from junior outfielder Thomas Delgadillo and junior shortstop Justin Summers. Both players had standout games and were key components to the Knights' offense. In three at-bats, Summers notched two hits, two runs, and one run batted in, while Delgadillo had two hits and two runs. With runners in scoring position, senior utility Donnie Gardiner came to the plate and shot one back up the middle into center field driving in two runs and giving ART U an early 2-0 lead.

The Eagles knocked in one run off senior pitcher Ben Kaser to bring the score to 2-1 at the end of the first inning. In 5.2 innings pitched, Kaser only allowed three runs off six hits with a single walk and four strikeouts.

After getting runners in scoring position, the Knights extended their lead 3-1 with a sacrifice bunt by senior catcher Zak May to bring across Summers. ART U kept the pressure on in the fifth when Delgadillo tripled to left center to open the inning. Summers hit a single to left to drive in a run and give ART U a 4-1 lead, but Biola answered back in the bottom of the inning with a double that plated two runs and brought them within one.

A couple scoreless innings passed until the eighth when the Knights came back with one last run after senior first baseman Angel Mora scored on a fielding error by the Eagles to extend ART U's lead to 5-3. A late rally by the Eagles loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth and a single down the left-field line  scored the winning run for BU. The loss to the Eagles puts the Knights at 13-18 overall, and 5-15 in conference. ART U will face Biola in a doubleheader, tomorrow starting at noon at Eagles Diamond.
